whats deal with this rumor of not letting a th400 shift while your burning out?
ive heard it blows the insides apart..

can anyone actually verify this? im buying a truck with a t400 and i plan to beat the heck out of it, and i guess i should know if i should let it spin in 2nd or shift it from 1-2 in the burnout box..

thanks

search doesnt really answer my question..

if i am in the throttle at say 5500 in 1st, and want to hit 2nd while in the burnout box..will my trans break? i heard it will.. but i dont understand how it will break if it will shift at WOT from 1-2 without lifting.

part of me understands the downshifting of a t400, but im more worried about shifting in the burnout box or romping on it and doing a rolling burnout and shifting 1-2

my 4l60e loved to be beat the balls off of. slam it into 2nd from 65-70mph. let it shift or manually shift it 1-2 2-3 while burning out.

the truck the th400 is in is a 3000lbs s10 pickup with a 406 in front of it..

I never had any trouble with mine and it was nothing fancy....basically stock with a shift kit, tranny cooler and 10" converter. I beat the heck out of it too....it was behind a .030 402.

the search is difficult to get a good answer if you don't ask the question several different ways,
i was interested in this also
this is an old post=

so....in summary...

Burn outs...spin in 1st, catch 2nd gear and throttle up, and get into 3rd before it hooks to the pavement (I always roast them through 2nd until it hooks (on pavement, not the strip) and drop into 3rd and let off...this sounds bad)

Do not throw it into neutral and coast (something I've done alot...this sounds bad too)

Do not downshift on deceleration above stall speed (also something I have done frequently...bad again)

If I am reading this correctly...my TH400 is toast

You have to remember that older threads drop off so even if a particular question was answered, sometimes it is not there anymore. Just about every question you can imagine has been already answered in the past but its always nice to hear a new answer/perspective to a question and keeps this board fresh. Just my $.02
