What processes do I need to have running for windows XP to defrag faster?

I don't have an XP computer to try it on, but if I did, I'd try to do it in safe mode. If it lets you do it that way, you should have a minimum of processes running.

And if you're not running the ntfs file system, convert.

I usually start my defrag and then go have a smoke, take a break in the "library", etc. I do not sit and watch the computer work. That will drive you nuts.

How do I get into safe mode ? F1 did that then where ? Last time I defraged by trying to shut off to many things,ya didn't like that

....continuously. You can also do start\run type in msconfig, hit enter, select the boot.ini tab and select safeboot.

I would just try it in normal mode with no apps running first. I've never had any problems with XP defrag, unlike WIN98.

I have my PC set up to do it on its own weekly at like 3am. Done before I wake up.

I did that took over an hour.But much beter than 3 hours it took before.

diskeeper is a very nice program and superior in my opinion the the base microsoft version.
