I bought a Dart intake 4150 style for my BBC with good intentions on using it. Now I hear it is not a good intake for my application. Wondering what you guys think.

It is going on a 555 pump gas motor, 10.3:1 comp, QFT 1050 cfm 4150 carb, AFR 325 Heads, Solid roller (not bought yet), street/strip 71 Camaro around 3400#, TH400, 4.11 gears.

Keep it and use it or sell and buy a Victor Jr or ???

Open for cam suggestions also!!

Use it. with 4.11 and suitable converter for the cam you select it'll be fine. just don't under-converter it.

I have two Dart Intakes, a 4150 style and a 4500 style. Both are Oval port but are modified to accomodate the "roval" intake port. An extensive amount of porting has been done to both manifolds and both are just fine on the street. The only problem with the Dart is that, like "any" other intake, they must be optimized for full potential performance. Whomever told you they won't work for the street is simply uninformed.

I didn't read it on hear. Just have been reading here and never posted, so I thought I'd ask.

Not sure what my converter will do behind the 555. It stalled at 3800 behind a 383 so we see!! If I have to restall it I will.

It will work..but remember...it was designed for a serious 454 type motor way back when. It's not in the league of the newer stuff designed for bigger motors. No reason you can't do some porting on it to max it out. Depends on how much power you're planning and how much RPM. 67RS502 runs one on his 10.0/130+ mph Camaro with a 502 in it.

With 555ci and the flow potential of those AFR's, you should probably have a Dominator. In my experience, its difficult to flow much more than 950 cfm through a 4150 base effectively. Also, a Vic Jr. is designed to maximize the flow characteristics of an 850cfm-- probably better suited to a well-built 454. I'd go with a Profiler and a Dominator if hood clearance isn't an issue--it's a big block, let it breathe!! :hurray:

I ran the Dominator version on my 509 and my 540. I changed to a CNC super victor looking for something better. But there was nothing wrong with the Dart manifold.

I'll work with you on a custom cam if you like. PM or call me.

wow

first the "850" they were so called designed for is honestly a 1000cfm

do you really think they design an intake with a given carb in mind other than 4500 or 4150? no

"Chevrolet 396-502 V8
VICTOR JR. 454-R (3500-7500 rpm)
VICTOR JR. 454-O (3500-7500 rpm)

Designed for competition 396-502 big-block Chevys. #2902 fits rectangular-port heads and #2904 fits large oval-port heads (1975 & earlier). These intakes are designed to optimize the flow characteristics of an 850 cfm standard flange carb. Features include extended runner dividers, smaller plenum chambers and unique runner design for better 60 foot times and max power from 3000 to 7500 rpm."

Anyone else want to chime in??

I'm getting ready to get this thing together and want to get it right the first time!
Most of the guys I work with will say that out of the box,the Dart intakes don't make near the power of the Edelbrock equivelant. They take a considerable amount of work to get them to the same level and they can be made to work very well. Once you start porting an intake, comparisons become irrelevant, but as I said, if you wnat to bolt something on without having to work on it, the Dart isn't your best bet. Personally, I think you're on the border of the Vic Jr. being a little small both in plenum and runner size. Really depends on how high you're going to spin it. If you're going any where near 7000, I'd run the Vic R and adapt your 4150 with a quality open adapter. It'll double as a spacer and give you a little more plenum volume wihich won't hurt. Also, settle on your intake before getting with Chris on the cam. It'll have some impact on his decision for a lobe profile and which dart to use.;)

I figured 7000 to be my max rpm. I spin my 383 a little higher than that now at the strip, but would like to keep this 555 at 7000 or less.

I'm not tied to the 4150 set up, but I do already own it, so I would like to be able to use it if possible. If it means giving up 20 hp so be it, but if it is more like 70 then I sell what I have and get what I need.
