Wondering if anyone here has tried either the CPP 13" disc kit and the Baer 13" track kits. I can't figure out why the Baer rear kits run $1300!!!!, whereas you can get the entire 13" CPP front and rear kit for only $1500. Trying not to sound like a cheap @ss, but is the Baer kit really that much better? $1300 for the rear seems a bit steep. Are the calipers gold plated?

I still can't decice if I want rear disc or not. If I decide against rear discs, then I'd order the AFX spindle kit from Mark @ SC&C for $900, which is pretty reasonable for 13" rotor kit. Then i'll need to decide on rear drums.

Thanks

I'm running the CCP 13" front and 12" rear, no complaints here, the kit fit and the brakes work great, I also could'nt see spending the money for Baer brakes either the CCP stop the car on a dime, but I'm not seeing any track time nor will I ever.

Another place you can check for brakes is Touring Classics. I just got their rear setup with 12" rotors and it looks identical to the Baer system that's on my El Camino. TC said the only difference is their rotors aren't zinc washed like Baer's. The rear kit from TC was about $800 including shipping.

A few more sources:

13" front C5 Vette brakes, to bolt to the stock Chevelle spindles (drum or disc)...

Engineered Velocity (72SS Abody- Joe from Team Chevelle). I don't know his current pricing, but he was able to beat Kore3's price (for TC members) AND included a Master cylinder last time I spoke to him...

Kore3... Fronts, $560 ($625 for drilled and slotted rotors) for the kit with NEW calipers, braided hoses, brackets, pads, etc. I even think it comes with wheel bearings... Pretty much complete kits (but no master cylinder and you supply the "drum" hubs)... I put one of these on my '66 last year... Very happy with the product, and the customer service, easy to "Bolt-On"... In fact, when I did this last year, they turned/cleaned my front hubs and installed races and studs for free I don't think they do this anymore...

Rear kits, IF you don't want/need an E brake, I think you can get the 12" rears starting at (Kore3) $445 ($510 w/drilled/slotted rotors), again with NEW calipers, brackets, braided flex hoses, etc... These use "Corvette" rear calipers and rear rotors (a little beefier than Camaro, but very similar)...

Thats $1000 for front and rear (basic kits), and figure another $300+ for shipping, master cylinder, adjustible Proportioning valve, new hardlines (for master or?)... Might be able to get a discount if you order both kits together? Sometimes they also have "specials" (I got something like $30 off of the "new" caliper kit back when I got the kit)...

You can also buy the brackets, and go to Ebay, or GM, etc and buy the calipers/pads/rotors yourself... Save some more money for a little hassle...

Baer stuff has always carried a premium price but it`s premium stuff too. The CPP parts I`ve seen look fine but they`re not at quite the same level. It concerns me that CPP is using a large PBR truck caliper in the front with larger bores than C5 calipers yet they`re still using C5 size rear calipers. The C5 brakes are amazingly well matched front to rear, using a much larger front caliper can only mismatch them. The only way to truly compensate for hydraulic mismatched calipers is 2 seperate master cyls. and an adj. balance bar which they don`t seem to offer.
Baer agonizes over every detail from the hydraulic matching to the composition and friction coefficient of the cast iron alloy used in their Eradispeed rotors to the heat treatment and alloy of each bracket. For a "driving around car" the cheaper kits are fine and a BIG step up from stock but we`ve found the Baer stuff to generally work and hold up better long term. Don`t forget Baer also gives a lifetime warranty on their rotors against warpage. Not a small thing when they cost $350pr.! Most of the cheaper 13" kits use drilled and slotted chinese knockoff rotors made of exactly what iron alloy? Even stock C5 rotors were designed to be as light as humanly possible and still stop a 3000lb. C5. Put them on a 3,800lb A body with a lot more front weight bias and weight transfer under hard braking and the rotors wear and warp quite rapidly. Knockoffs die even faster especially if the drilling and slotting is done improperly ,as it is about 90% of the time.
Are Baer kits a thousand dollars or more better? Not for some folks (and for them Kore 3 etc. are a good alternative),but many other folks find Baers to be worth every penny. Like anything else you reach a point of diminishing returns. At a certain point each small increment of improvement costs proportionately more money. Mark SC&C
