Cost of 200r4 swap? $2500?

I've been considering adding overdrive to my 72 Cutlass because I drive the car everyday and a decent share of it on the freeway. I've read up on all the posts, and it looks like the 200r4 is what I want for my stock 350. I talked to a reputable shop and they quoted me about $2500 all said and done out the door, saving only about $100 if I brought in a used tranny from say a Monte or something as opposed to buying one from them.

I've done most of my suspension upgrades myself, as well as my interior, but the transmission is something I think I need to leave to professionals. From the posts I've read, I figured this would cost me less than $2K... is that a pipe dream? :(

Thanks in advance,

Riley

That does sound pricy but if the trans is very well built, they are doing removal/install, and setting up shift points etc that may not be a bad price. If its a column shift car they needs to do some mods to the shifter linkage im sure. Are they offering a warrenty?

if they are saying $2400 if u buy a used tranny yourself thats outragous. Putting the tranny in is easy, and u could do it yourself, its only 6 bolts on the bellhousing and bolting in the crossmember, and bolt up the torque converter. I assume the driveshaft would need cut? that shouldnt cost that much, and the linkage would probably swap over easyily from a junk yard monte carlo. i changed the 200r4 in my 85 monte carlo ss and had never done it before, it was easier then i thought. Id suggest just pulling a tranny and linkage from a monte carlo. and putting it in yourself. Prob could do it for under $300. I got a 200r4 from a guy for $200, put a $75 trans go shift kit in, and it lived behind my 400hp 350 for 2 years when i sold the car.

They told me "turn key" and said it's "rebuilding the 2004r to new, new converter, TV cable kit, lock up wiring kit, crossmember, shifter kit, labor for installing, speed o gears, dipstick, inspection cover, fluid."

The thought of doing it myself is always more fun than actually doing it, and I would like to save money and learn, but don't currently have garage space to work out and am more than a bit cautious because I know nothing about transmissions.

Also, if any Socal guys have recommendations of somebody that could do it for less, my ears are definitely open!

i put a 700r4 in my Monte for the cost of a case of ATF and filter. oh, and the $5 for the qjet tv cable mount off a mid 80's Cutlass with a 307.
of course, i had the trans laying around from a 92 Caprice cop car i parted out, and i cut the driveshaft myself (amazingly easy, actually, and haven't had any bad vibes from it in 3 years).
the crossmember slid right back to the TH400 location, the speedo cable and cooler lines hooked right up, and the column shifter work perfect and goes into all gears, but i had to adjust the neutral switch a bit so it worked properly.
it is worth noting that in my car- aero package of a brick, weighs 4000 pounds, has 2.73 gears and 28" tall tires, and the gutless stock 350- i actually lost some mpg for all my efforts. but it is slightly quieter at 80mph, and the steep first gear gives me the confidence to pull out in traffic.

Riley,

I was quoted $2500 out the door from Art Carr in Huntington Beach (probably charging more because of the Overhaulin' and Hot Rod Magazine connections).

I was also quoted $1750 out the door from a local shop here in Mission Viejo who has rebuilt a late model trans for me. Very clean and organized shop. Lifetime warranty on the one they rebuilt for me and free fluid and filter change every 12000 miles.
