Hi all, am installing a comp 292h in a 350 chevy. Has anyone ever used this cam and how did they like it? I will have 9.75-10 compression, 32-3500 converter, dart dual plane air gap intake and either a 3.73 or 4.10 gear all in a 78 malibu. Oh should I install it straight or advance? Thanks for the input!! :D

Yeah, not only will it like a good bit more compression than you planned, but Id say closer to a 3800 converter and 4.10 gears for sure. Hopefully youve got some good heads too, cause thats cams gonna want 6500rpm easy to run the way it was built to and you need something that flows. A good 200cc head would do it. Make sure its good though. For heads, I wouldnt consider anyting smaller than a 200cc port(unless its like a canfield or afr 190 or 195 cause you can stretch those heads pretty far). A set of ported 200cc pro topline heads would be nice. The way things are sounding now, Id say an XE 274 or something comparable is where you should be looking. Another cam that would do well is a comp 282 solid magnum. Oh yeah, the dual plane with that 292 cam isnt the closest match either. It would like a single plane intake and a double pumper carb. Another reason Id go a little milder with the cam like the XE 274. Check out the voodoo cams too. They are sold through lunati and are made to compete with comp cams camshafts. They are designed by one of comps old designers, harold brookshire, yet he took it a step above and beyond what he used to do for comp. Id say the voodoo 276 would be the hot ticket for a hydro cam.

Used a 292H Comp in a 355 with about 10:1 w/ pair of Dart Sportsmans...even with 3.08's it turned on very well IMHO..never went to the track, but it was a fun driver.
It was in an 86 Iroc Z..TH350/3000 stall,and a 3" exhaust/headers
Had a 3310 carb too.Never felt "soft" anywhere.
But,IMHO there are better cams out there now...this was over 10 years ago.

Even in a 383, for real good results you wouldnt want anyting less than 10.5:1 compression and a 3500 converter. And still good heads will be important. The extra displacement will help out some, but not enough with everything else being as is with only the exception of about 30 more cubes.

Not to bring this back up, just adding to it for the archives since I pulled it up in a search.

I have it in a 383 with a 3500 converter and the stock 2.73 rear with 26" tires. The converter seems to be the key, as it would be a complete dog without it (I would imagine). The engine is very torquey in itself, and when the converter flashes the tires are lit up like nothing. I plan on installing 4.11's in the rear this winter if I can fund it. Then eventually mounting up some 28" tires that I bought a couple years ago onto some rims and on the car. Should help it out tremendously.

Without actually being on the strip, and barely ever being on the street with it, i'll still call it a good borderline in between cam. I feel with a decent converter, gearing, and at least a set of mild heads, it shouldn't be soft anywhere. But whether it can be called a street/strip cam, that's a personal opinion.

I'm running the Comp 280H cam and am happy (for now). I was at 9.5est compression whith old "stock" heads on a 406ci SB,350th,2200 12" stall, and 2.73's= a best of 13.5@101.7. Now with 3.73's and all else the same = 13.2@103.XX. New heads, comp up to 10.17:1 is below and still tunning.

I just went to a 10" 3000 stall and Vic Jr. intake, gotta start all over with the combo dial in.
