I've had pretty good success with Craigslist. Some people that are dumbasses of course, but overall most folks have been pretty ok. I hate it when people call about something ,or you try and call them, and they don't ever return calls to say something is sold.

Last week I had a guy call me looking for an M20. I told him I was about to finish putting one together, and that I would call him after I got a chance to run it around to make sure everything worked ok. Two days later I called him and didn't get an answer. Which is understandable, people miss calls. It happens. I call back a few hours later and leave a message this time. Two more days go by and I call him one more time. No answer. The message was pretty clear by the time the third call was made, but it can't hurt to try one more time. Last call was made on Sunday. Still nothing.

There have been rare times when I've thought I wanted to look at something so I'll call to make an appointment. I'll realize later I don't really need the stuff. I'll at least call and tell the person I have changed my mind. It's not that hard.

I'm selling a VERY low mileage 82 Dodge
Base truck--no options
Brand new tires and battery

I get people asking if I will part it out
take half of my asking price
and bother me with stupid text messages all day.

Then---don't show up when they say they will.

I would not hesitate for one minute to drive it all the way across the country tomorrow.
only has 60,000 on it and it is over 30 years old.
Not taking half of the asking price just because it is old.
Not parting it out

it's paid for
does not eat
and can be parked quite comfortably anywhere on my property without being in the way.

Frankly---don't care if it sells or not

I always low-ball people..... You would be supprised at how much you can work somebody down. I also do it in a respectfull way... Unless of course they are way over priced to start with, which is about 90% of the junk on CL....
Having said this, I also sell quite a bit on CL. But if I want $350 for something, I list it for $500. Then when someone offers me $250, I say $350 and it's yours..... Works every time.
Bingo, poster above is a CL pro.

I have scored some ridiculous deals using that strategy and I've also sold a bunch of stuff at what I really wanted or MORE. Price things slightly above true value and let people "win" and "get a deal" and as long as your "true bottom dollar" is reasonable, it will sell.

For example, I had a T56 core with a ls1 bellhousing. 2nd or 3rd gear was out according to the guy I got it from. Normal core price is around $450...I listed it at $600 just to feel it out and had a guy come pick it up 2 days later for $600 cash.

Sold my Chevelle buckets the same way. They were a little rough and I listed them at $500 and had a guy pick them up for $400 (I really only wanted $350)

That said there are a lot of locals who try to sell things for higher than new price or the geezers selling their C5 Corvette mid life crisis cars for $10-15k OVER what they're worth (eg listing a 2001 for the price you can pick up a clean C6).

The trick is when you inquire about an ad of something for sale is not to go into it expecting to hear nothing. Out of the 10 things I enquire about, im lucky I get 2 responses back.

I use CL daily for selling or advertising my small business. I hate the spam that results from posting. Used to be just emails that you could tell were fake but I now get text messages as well. I even spell out a couple of my phone #'s so the trackers can't see it.. Doesn't work anymore.

But I can't stand sellers who I call and tell them I want their item and will be over after work to buy it. Ask them to hold it for me and they say no problem. Then I call to get directions and they have sold it!! Pisses me off :/

My biggest beef about CL is people who seem to have a huge fear of a personal conversation. Anytime I have something listed I state in the ad, "Please call, I will not respond to text messeges or emails". And what do I get most of the time? Yup, text messeges and emails  Why are people so afraid to have a conversation these days?

You going to see that, it's common. I sell vehicles, and if they lowball me I simply laugh at them and say I'm firm. They drove to me. I've also gotten the "can you meet me?" 90% of those people will not buy anyway, unless they are coming from another state. Yeah, if a guy drives up from Iowa I'll meet him in the southern metro from the northern metro, I've done that.

I also hate when they ask "what's your bottom dollar" on the phone, or make an offer on the phone before they see the vehicle, because once those people see the vehicle, they will offer even lower then "my bottom dollar" or what they agreed to.

When they ask what I'll take, I always say "I'll take it as long as it's a reasonable offer. Bring cash." Never give them a number.

Because they are quick and easy and you don't have to worry about catching someone when they can talk. I hate phone tag. A text can be read anytime and the person can respond at his/her leisure.

I also have no interest in talking with most people on CL in the first place. I always meet around town somewhere and not at my house. Too many weirdos.

Not sure if my opinion is of any use, but I buy on CL and rarely sell. Often I'd sooner put it out by the curb one day early. I put rocks out--gone.

CL is the bottom of the barrel.

You get BS responses, press delete. See, how hard was that?
Good response? Reply.
Save the reply to paste into the next reply.
Update the ad to weed out the question just asked.
Repeat.

Use the 5 lines above and see how it goes.

For those er, knocking down the price, just say I'll negotiate after you see the object. Again, paste after saving from the first reply.

You don't have to retype this crap. You can have multiple windows open. Also, the windows don't have to occupy the whole screen. That's why its not called door...
