Also, I added a thin shim to tighten up carrier preload. This brought my backlash to .006, with new bearings is this to tight? With the carrier installed, you can turn the whole assembly by hand using moderate pressure. I know this is not very scientific, but does that sound reasonable? Thanks for any responses as I'm ready to close it up and re-install it so I can move to the front suspension.

You don't have a very clear pattern on the gear. It looks like it might be good, but it is hard to tell. Try using less marking compound and run the gear around a few more times to wipe it off more. I only mark 3 teeth at a time so the rest of the teeth will wipe off the excess marking compound. This makes it a lot easier to tell what the pattern realy looks like. As for the bearing preload, if you can hold the ring gear and pull the differential out by hand it isn't tight enough. The backlash is probably all right at .006, but I would not go any tighter.

BGH, thanks for the reply. Maybe these pictures will be a little better, according to a guide sheet I found on the net, it should be allright. Just wanting to get an experienced opinion. when I set the carrier preload I used a hammer and chisel to drive the last thick shim into place. I didn't beat the hell out of it, just coerced it a little. You can't lift it out by hand you would have to use pry bars to remove it. How tight would be to tight on the carrier preload? I can still rotate the pinion and carrier by hand with moderate pressure. Thanks for your time. OK lets see if the pics work now.

Maybe it is my computer, but the pictures are still blury. It does look like you have a good pattern on both sides. It should be fine. As for the preload, you can't drive the shims in too tight without damaging them. If it is tight enough that you can't pull it back out without prying then it is tight enough. Looks like you did it all right.

Thanks BGH, no its not your computer ,it's my photography. If my wife knew I had her camera in "that stinky garage, she'd s*$t". Finnaly got rid of that burnt 90# smell in the garage, so she's being more sociable now.

thank you very much for all of your help, saved me some cash, got some new tools and got the satisfaction of doing it my self. Dave
