Hello everybody , I have a question regarding CE - counter engines / warranty engines : if an engine was replaced in warranty the specs like ; compression ratio ,pistons, type of heads and general performance of that engine would be of the year it was built or had same specifications and performance of the engine it was replacing .. Example i have a 402 - 1971 CE 3969854 block my CR would be 10.25:1 as in a 69 /70 L 34 ? The HP + TQ figures would be the same or different as in a 71 LS3? What about if someone needed a replacment for a 454 LS 6 in 1973 ? Did he get a downtuned 454 ?
Please enlighten me ... Thanks

There's no way to tell if the CE engine matched the specs of the engine it replaced under warranty without the part number tag that would be long gone by now.
Hopefully whoever did the replacement did order the right engine.

Just an FYI,your Incorrect on your 71 402 bbc stock comp ratio.

In 1971 gm reduced comporession ratio in your 402 bbc from 10.25.1 to approx 9.0-9.5 in for emmissions regs.

GM did that by simply installing larger chamber 820 lrg oval port heads which reduced comp while using same moderate dome size pistons that 1970 and older bbc motors used along with 290/063 smaller chamber lrg oval port heads that made for a stated higher comp of approx 10.25.1 per GM.

That's where the lack of info comes in.
If it was a fitted block or a short block ,then the original heads would have been used.
If it was a long block(doubtful for a warranty job) then it could have the larger chamber heads.
Oliver ,what's the rest of the info after the stamped CE -it'll give the year it was assembled.

Well either way,if it was fitted 1971 shrot block using original heads for 71 they would be lrg chamber 820 heads for lower comp .

If it was a71 long block it would still have had the same lrg chamber 820 heads used in 71.

But as we all know god only knows what heads are currently on his motor some 40+ yrs later let alone pistons that are in the block no matter what the prior owner told him,you never know whats really the case till ya tear into it.

Could get casting date off block but again 40 yrs later the pistons/heads etc can all be different.

So 402 , 3969854 stamped CE 160419 ... thats all i have at the moment... i should see the heads numbers ...wich should be either 820 open chamber (1971 ) or 290 (1969) closed chamber , correct ?

but my question was also in general about CE engines .. i immagine the car owner wanting an engine similar to the one being replaced and not a detuned one. was that happening ?

As your showing a 71 , and there was only one 402 in that year ,it's more than likely the original OEM LS3 spec'd fitted block or short block.
Id'ing the heads would help narrow down the c/r but it's still just an assumption.
As Scott said ,tearing it down is really the only way to know what's there for sure.

 i guess is the only way to know for sure ..Thanks ,
in my other posts in performance section my HP + TQ were estimated to 375 HP + 440 lbs ft TQ due my non stock cam http://www.lunatipower.com/Product.aspx?id=2028&gid=245

i hope their estimate is not too optimistic...:D
