I want to know if you think this is crazy. If admissable, I'm looking for info as to where I should go looking for a good little small block new, in Quebec or Ontario, I can have fun with. (U.S. Customs is a real barrier for $)

I have a 71 in pristine condition. I have yet to see another Chevelle in such a shape. Real survivor category stuff. Bad paint 10 years ago with an HEI added to replace the points at that time.

I live in Quebec & will return to NFLD for 8 week holiday. (I'm a teacher after all

) I want to bring home the Chevelle. I'm thinking about finding a small block 8 cyl. for the summer. The original is a 6 cyl. in very good condition. I want to crate it up (motor, trans. mounts & drive shaft) and put it in the garage for a couple of years maybe.

My mechanic says I'm nuts. 1 I'll hurt the value. 2 I'm wasting money.

I feel bad about using my car as much as I do on these long trips down east each year. I'd like to say I have the original everything in 20 years. I feel like I'm running the guts out of the 6 cyl. with its powerglide 2 speed trans. It does have a very nice 3.07 rear end that I don't want to crucify either.

I admit, I'd like to have some fun this summer - I need a new project - and don't want to wear the Velle out just yet.

P.S., it's a 4-door

so I need to remain conscious of its value. Changing things takes away from its value. I can't show the car for points this summer I realise, but I can have fun and not feel so bad about running the guts out of the original motor.

Then again, my mechanic thought I was nuts when I bought it. I still think I have a nice find - and you all will be jealous in 10 years, as soon as you are finished cannibalising 4-doors to keep yours going

Am I doing something sooo wrong?

P.P.S., I started the car the other day. Ins. company wanted to inspect the car in person!

It turned over and ran like a kitten. I only had to scratch its tummy a little

In my opinion, anything original that is carefully unbolted & preserved cannot hurt the value. You would enjoy a 350, I say go for it.

I don't know of any aftermarket parts places that sell whole engines around here. I would say a GM crate motor from your local dealer is the way to go personally.

Good luck.

Give D&D Performance in Chesterville Ont a call at 613-448-3502. They have a VERY good reputation in the area here and usually have a few diff variables available at any given time. I think right now they have a few 383 strokers if your game.

Anyways, give em a call, what can it hurt?!

And if I'm not mistaken, on the outskirts of Montreal there is a speedshop called Raceshop2000, look them up, he is an avid racer with full dyno set up and the works. He may have something for you, or may recommend a reliable place. If I think of it I'll try and look up the number for you in my piles and piles of contacts info, lol.

Good luck and keep us informed...
