Hello
I am needing some help on a cam selection. I have a .30 over 454 with fully professionally ported 049 oval port heads with oversize valves 10.5 to 1 compression, gapless rings, victor jr, holley 950hp (worked over by bigs performance for this engine) and its setup with a hydraulic roller cam. The current specs i am unsure of and the builder cant find the slip although i am positive that the exhaust lift is just over 600 and the intake just under 600. Anyhow it was a custom grind that the builder ordered but i am quite unhappy with the results. We dyno'd it and it made 524 HP and gaining @ 6500 (didnt want to spin it more) and 480 something TQ at 4000 something rpm, sorry i dont have the dyno sheet as he misplaced that as well (not real happy with this builder). Anyhow i had seen similar builds to mine that have used the ultradyne 288/296 flat tappet cam and made considerably more HP and TQ than my engine (which has a roller cam). I am pretty sure its the cam choice i have now as everything else in the engine is top notch. I dont really want to go back to a flat tappet and i am hoping you guys can help me out with a suggestion. It will be backed with a TH400 (converter hasnt been picked yet) with a 4:10 rear ratio. The engine for sale in this classified ad http://www.chevelles.com/classifieds/showproduct.php?product=23047&cat=6 is virtually identical to mine and uses the ultradyne 288/296 and made over 600 hp and 550 tq.
Anyhow thanks for your time and appreciate any responses!

Somethings up.

With fully ported heads and a 230ish+ HR cam you should be at least 550, but 525 is close enough. Your torque surprised me...should be around 550ftlbs IMO. Engine dyno right?

Did you try tuning it? Wonder if the carb and/or timing is off a bit.

Questions - who ported the heads? Same builder? Power still climbing at 6500 w/ hyd roller = way too much duration. And for what it's worth, your power is most likely crashing in a hurry by 6500 with a hyd roller - and oval ports to boot. You need to get some hard data. But, I would tell you a 454.030 motor w/ oval ports doesn't want much more than about 240@ .050 on the intake side w/ hyd roller.

Yes it was an engine dyno not a chassis. We tuned on it the whole day the carb was within 1 jet size of being perfectly setup out of the box from bigs performance and we tried two other carbs neither of which produced as well as this one. We were thinking it had to be the carb because we just werent getting the numbers we should have but that wasnt it.

Yes the same builder or i should say his head guy who has been doing it for over 20 years ( i actually think he has more brains than the shop owner).

You are talking about the 402A7lun grind of Harolds -

Adv - 288/296
@.050 - 255/263
Lift - .612"/.630"
LSA/ICL - 110/104
lash - .024"/.026"

Once you go solid, you won't look back.

Heck, order this little solid lifter flat tappet cam UDHarold created for me for my 496 and go!!

278/249/161, 110/106, .618" gross lift and need's .018" lash on both sides!!

And pass on the hy-roller cam.

I figure Harold created a midrange grunt monster of a flat tappet smaller big motor cam for me at my request...

What did I say about posting this cam on the Nasty site?:p:noway:;):D:p:p
