Bizarre, temporary "situation" with my car. Any guesses as to what it was?

Yesterday I am rolling down a toll road in my 72. Traffic is light, and I'm doing 75-80 (fastest I've ever driven this car, now that I think about it). All good, no sweat.

As I approach a toll booth and slow down, I start hearing a loud metallic rattling-type sound. Hard to describe, but it sounded something like maybe something hitting the fan blades? But is sounds like it's coming from the rear of the car.

I come to a complete stop, the sound is LOUD! I frantically check the gauges - all good. I put it in neutral, and the sounds is still there. I quickly pay my toll and start planning on where I can exit to shut down and take a look before I make it any worse.

As I leave the toll booth and get back up to speed, the sound subsides quickly and then goes away. I take my exit, and everything sounds and feels normal. I get out and take a look, and can't see anything wrong. The only potential thing I think I notice is maybe a slight smell of exhaust inside the car? This could be my imagination, as I have driven it mostly with the top down. And the exhaust is all new, from the headers to the tips...

Any ideas? It's got me baffled...

I loaded some stuff into my Sprint to haul off and heard a mysterious metalic clanking noise. Stopped to look it over, nothing obvious. Turned out to be a broken exhaust hanger at the muffler...

Something hitting the driveshaft or maybe a broken brake shoe spring?
