I probably ought to be shot for doing it but I've hauled a lot more than good sense would allow in my daily driver '79 Malibu wagon. A buddy had a friend who had "some" big block parts that he would trade for a remote control airplane that I owned. When I got there I discovered that the guy wanted to trade three complete but disassembled 396's. Needless to say I made the trade and loaded ALL THREE big blocks in the old wagon. The diff was on the bumpstops and I slowly drove the 9+ miles home without a problem. This is without a doubt the most reliable automobile I've ever owned- 300,000 miles now, and with the new motor it ought to be good for another 125,000 before any major work needs to be done. I love it!

I hauled a complete disassembled small block - Block, Crank, Rods/pistons, heads, intake with carb, valvetrain in my wife's cavalier. The Chevelle hauled my complete current big block in the trunk 700+ lbs and it drove fine.

a bare block is pretty lite. A few months ago I came out of the bar and found 1 by the trash. A buddy I was with wanted it so I grabbed it and flipped it in the back of a pickup. that 350 sb couldn't be over 200lbs. It was heavier when I unloaded it without stopping at the bar first.
Heres how you see if your car can handle it. Get your biggest 200+ lb buddy to ride home in the trunk. If all goes well the engine will be fine. It'll be smaller and lighter than the guy in the trunk.

Here's a question. Is there anyone here who has a Chevelle that won't haul 3 grown men in the back seat? (600lbs?) So, a BB in the trunk with you driving should be no problem.

I once saw an Elky with a 454 in the bed. Funny thing is that it was all hooked up and drove the car!! I kid you not. Wierest piece of engineering I've ever seen. Ever seen bugs on a valve cover before??

If I had 600 #'s of woman in the back seat, I'd need about a twelve pack! An old friend, Gordy McDonald from Minnisota, had a '68 Camaro. He used to haul small block engines around in the trunk, no problem. Hell, that big ogre used to lift the block in by himself.

Hey Gorbe... that would make them 50 pounds each... about the size of a 3rd or 4th grader. I'm not sure who scares me more, orrie with the trunk full of thick girls or gorbe with the back seat full of children, stacked like cord wood no less.

I put a 427 Vette block, the forged steel crank, the rectangular port heads, an extra set of 396 oval ports, the pistons with the rods and rings, oil pan, harmonic balancer, factory aluminum intake from a 65 Z-16/or396/425hp Vette and a solid cam...all in the back of my girlfriend's 87 Cavalier.
I kid you not. It was all disassembled of course. Gettin the block in was somewhat hard, but as one post read....you will blow a nut tryin to get the darn thing out. That little car squatted and we had to drive about 110 miles to get to my parents house. Thought I might blow her tires out, but she was as smooth as a kitten.
I guarantee the junk I had in the trunk was worth more than the car that was carryin it!

Wow, I didn't think this thread would last this long. I did put the 396 block in the trunk of my 71. Along with the crank. Worked out great. Of course it was a real pain to lift it out.

Got it back this weekend. Am starting to assemble the bottom end. Will post pictures on my website as soon as I can.
