Looking for general concensus on the best restoration book for a 1968 Chevelle SS396 -- sticker locations, suspension/frame component finishes for correct gloss/semi-gloss color, hose clamp o'clock positioning, cigarette lighter identification guide, etc.

All the anal-retentive stuff that shows what was factory-correct for the car :D ... What's the best book(s) to get?

There isn't a whole lot out there on 68s. Your best source is the factory assembly manual, available from most of the usual sources, Ground Up, OPGI, Year One, etc. This is the manual used on the assembly line when they built the car. When you get it, take a few nights to look it over & figure out how it was written, it can confuse you at first. You can also go to Books A Million, Barne & Noble, or other bookstores & just look through their selection & see if the book has what you're looking for in it. Or just ask the guys in these forums.

Get a copy of the factory assembly manual.

The Paul Herd book is too full of errors to be trusted. If you followed that book you might end up with a good LOOKING car but you would not have a CORRECT looking car.

After the assembly manual already mentioned, reprints of the original GM shop manuals can be very helpful. In order of importance:

-shop manual
-chassis service manual
-body manual
-chassis overhaul manual
