I had ARP studs put in my BBC build (489 - 4-bolt mains) and the extension on the #3 main studs for the windage tray hits the pan. I believe what I have is the standard 5 qt pan (the sump measures approx 8" deep and it is 9" long). GMPartsDirect lists a 6 qt pan (p/n 14103141 for an LS6) - does anyone know the dimensions of the sump? There are no measurements of course in the catalog. Anyway, I'm trying to find a pan that will clear the bolts.

I only have long studs on the #3 and #4 mains so I guess I'm limited to the stock windage tray. The Milodon trays appear to all be held on with 3 mains - that would require an even longer sump and I'm not sure I can squeeze that pan in. These extensions are not supposed to be cut to fit the pan are they? I measured them and they only extend 4-7/8" from the pan rail - its the pan sump in front where they hit. Hoping someone has some info on this to help me out. Thanks. -Bob

My Moroso pan hit the studs too. I just trimmed off the end of the studs that hit the pan. Mock up the tray to see where the nuts will be and then trim off the excess length.

I think the studs are hitting the baffle in the pan - don't know if denting that will provide enough clearance or not - it looks like I need a good 1/2" before the pan will fit. Guess I can try that first - then cut the studs if need be.

Drill holes in the baffle for the studs to go through. Then trim studs if still needed. Fitting pans to windage trays and scrapers are a pain. You can buy all "matched parts" and the stuff still dosnt fit.

Any suggestion on how to cut the ARP studs? I have the same problem on #3 with a Moroso 20401 pan and the factory windage tray. Use a cut off wheel?

or a hacksaw. they're not hard at all.

I trimmed the studs with a cut off wheel, Drilled 3/4 holes in the pan baffle, then had dent the pan with a ball peen hammer. The whole operation took about 20 minutes.

Hi Tom.
Thanks all.
Every time I try to use a hacksaw, even with 2 blades, I foul up the threads;)
Its one of those tools that I should keep away from, just like woodworking tools.:D

I'll do the cut off wheel as I only need to remove 3/8 of an inch.
These studs are annoying as they are 3/8" longer than the factory bolts and that is just enough in number cap 3 to cause this.

I actually sent a note to ARP just to voice my displeasure ;).

Well I just trial fit the oil pan to the block. Now the GM windage tray keeps the pan 1/4" off the block rails. Any suggestions on which windage tray or how best to trim the GM windage tray?

Moroso 20401 pan seems to have big interference with the GM windage tray.

i just used a cut off wheel to cut my front springs. there was a LOT of heat. not sure what this would do to the strenght of the stud. i guess if you went really slow and used a damp rag you could keep it cool. Dave

If you put a nut on the stud before you cut it,no matter what method you use it will fix the threads if they get messed up.You can take a file or a die grinder/high speed and clean up any damage. But again do this before you remove the nut so it will reform the threads. I hope this helps.

20401 pan now fits with GM tray.:D

My son and I raised the height of the front of the tray (one advantage to the ARP studs) slightly and all went together well, We dropped in the crank and 1 rod just to make sure that all would fit and everything looks good.

So I overcame the fear of cutting the stud. I used a cut off wheel and then went to the grinder. When you are careful and gentle anything is possible :)
