What takes the place of the Malibu dash clock on a 66 SS with center console clock?

As for my 66SS, it has both the clock on the dash and a clock in the console. So I am going under the impression that you get both with a console.

I always thought that 66SS console option cars always got the gauge package... And the 66 Malibu console optioned cars got the clock delete intrument cluster unless gauges were ordered as an option also...
Is this not true?

Years ago the way I remember things, all clock delete cluster cars were Malibu's. Nowadays you seem to see the clock delete clusters on many SS cars.Maybe it was a powerglide or 4 speed thing? I guess I do not know for sure!!!

Can someone help clear up my confusion on this?
Thanks DANO

No, that's not true. ;)

Remember gauge pkg., consoles, buckets, 4 speeds, all of it.. OPTIONS., not STANDARD equipment.

The only thing you could be sure of with a Console equipped 66 ( Malibu or SS ) was that you got a clock in the console. Gauges and Trans type, had nothing to do with any of it.

I have a friend with a 66 Maibu Conv. National AACA Champion, the car is a Bucket Seat, no console, Automatic.

And non-console/guage cars got the dash-top clock as standard? Or was the clock optional always?
According to the GM kit for 66's, the clock was standard on 135-136-138xx model Chevelles (Malibu and SS) and a dealer installed option on all others. Ordering a console required bucket seats as well got you the clock in the console as part of the deal. The "Special Instrumentation" package (RPO U14) - available on Sport Coupe and convertibles only - got the ammeter, temp, oil pressure and parking brake warning lamp and included the tach on V8 models. No mention of what happened to the clock if console was NOT ordered. Hmmm... There was also a top dash mounted clock available as a dealer installed accessory.

As this topic unfolds I must ask... Was there column shift 66 SS cars? With that question asked, was there column shift 66 SS cars with the gauge package?(auto or manual) I have never seen any that I can remember.

Dale, are you saying you could only get the gauge package on SS cars? Thanks DANO

As this is being hashed out just remember all this info pertains to US built cars Canadian built chevelles have some "different" packages again!

Yes, but just automatics (Powerglides). All manuals were floor shifted. A 3-speed manual was the base transmission for the 66 SS, with a floor shifter as part of the package.

I have even seen a few factory bucket seat/column shifted Powerglide 66 SS's...

Well, I can say for sure that my car does not have a guage package it sure does have both clocks in it and the speedo appears to have never been taken out before.

I have seen several other console equipped non-guage cars that appearently recieved a clock in the dash too. Some I know were unrestored original cars.

You can take the dash out, you can take the speedo out, and there is nothing that would indicate that either have been out. Taking a dash and a speedo out of a 66 is not exactly hard. I have had mine apart several times, and I bet you couldn't show me anything that would indicate it's been out, much less apart. Something had to have been changed in it's life, I just couldn't imagine two clocks coming from the factory! That just doesn't make since.

My "1966 Malibu SS Convertible" has no clock in dash, just clock in center console. Seems like it would look very strange if they put 2 clocks in the car???

And I guess if the person did order it that way, he or she must have had some issues :D
