66/67 owners- Where is your tach mounted?

I hate where a previous owner mounted the aftermarket tach in my 66. Blocked the ashtray from opening.

Removed it last night and moved it to the Left (back where it clearly had previously been) quickly realized why they moved it- its worse there.
Car has a 14" steering wheel which makes things worse i think. a 15" you could see it through the spokes easier.

Contemplating getting a 2-5/8" tack to match the O/P and temp gauges and put it in a 3 pod in the center with the other two.

Thought I'd ask to see what other people have done in 66/67s

Thanks!
Ben

I prefer the tach on the steering column. The reason being the higher mounting position makes it quicker and easier to see while driving as itis barely be.ow the top of the dash.. Especially during periods of enthusiastic acceleration.

'66 & 67 Chevelles are my favorite body styles ever produced, but the dash is such a killjoy for this reason. Us Chevy guys got hosed compared to what the GTO/LeMans cars were given.

I've always thought the Beaumonts have the best of both worlds. Clean Chevy body lines with that upgraded Pontiac interior including the round pods on the dash. Some day I'll own one.

I agree with this... I loved the dash in my 66 Cutlass with the big round speedo and gauges cluster.

A friend of mine has the Dakota digital VHX insert in his 66 and its cool, but I like the newer "HDX" version better, little more professional looking, less neon... Maybe something I'll consider eventually.

Probably has the original KK wire loom tucked under their unless it was spliced for that aftermarket tach.
Same goes for the original gauges wires which could have been spliced into also.
Gauge package came with KK tach also even with a 283, buckets and console.
I would stay original as mentioned above and try to get everything working being that everything else
it is mostly stock looking.

Front and center on the column, I wouldn't consider mounting it anywhere else. More important than any other instrument back in the day.....we even knew how fast we were going by looking at the tach.
We have a 1969 GTO with a built in tach...not visible enough compared to front and center on the column.

In fact I just acquired a real vintage Sun tach a few weeks ago....especially for the steering column on my '70 454 Chevelle.

Reminds me of the days when acquiring a Sun tach was special and cool.. kinda like Hurst Super shifters, Stewart Warner under dash gauges..., Cragar wheels, Cushman Silver Eagle scooters, Hookers, Front Runners, Rat Fink and Moon Eyes decals.... I'm still living that dream...never stopped I guess....lol.

My 66 KK tach is right where it belongs, and it works just fine to where I want to shift on the back roads.
If I were taking it to the strip - I would figure out a way to temporarily mount a shift light front & center. Something I can store away after leaving the strip. But that's just me....

Agree with Pete et al above, 67 dash is a bummer as compared to other A bodies.

PS I NEVER use the 67 blinker tach. Find i useless where it is. I shifted the 427 by ear, and now have a chip to keep me from having TOO MUCH FUN with the MJ467.

If you race alot, i would suggest a simple shift light on dash. My plan anyway.

My current ‘67 came with the full gauge package so it has the original blinker tach, which works fine. But this Chevelle is no hot rod! L35 Th400 car.

My first ‘67 had no gauges, just idiot lights! I was a kid with little money and all I wanted was the L78 engine with 4-speed and 4.10 posi! I did get a few other options: power steering, sim wood steering wheel, push button am radio with rear antenna...that’s it!

I added a 10,000 RPM Sun Super Tach on the right side of the steering column which was easy since I had the floor shifter. Back then tachs were sold with the attaching hardware to the steering column so it was easy and a perfect location.

When drag racing I found that location to be perfect and an important gauge to have! 🤣

I had bought that tach for placement on the dash of my ‘55 Chevy and I have pics of that car showing the tach. But no pics showing it on my ‘67 SS except for maybe a bit of the chrome bezel visible from a single photo of the interior from the driver door thru the open window. It was mounted higher than where Stickman’s is shown above.
