During the rebuild of my friend Shaun's 454 he installed the rear cam plug, which I presume is for the rear cam bearing access hole (it looks like a frost plug) at the rear of the block. He drove it in approximately 1/16" past flush (concave side out), and the plug contacted the cam and even pushed it out a touch. The timing chain is not yet on, so the cam may not be in the exact correct place yet.

How far in should the plug be from the rear face of the block at the boss for the plug? Is there a spec on clearance to cam?

Is there different types of plugs - could we have the wrong one?

Anyone have any tips or suggestions for what we did wrong or should do next for a successful install?

It should look like a very shallow freeze plug. Not even half the depth of a normal freeze plug. If it looks like a regular freeze plug I'd get the right one. You can tap it out with the cam. Be sure to use a little RTV going back in with the new one.

Tom the plug is the right one, but the problem is how far is to far when it comes to installing it? :confused: .
When I installed it I thought it would only go in so far and that would be that but that did not seem to be the case. Or maybe it is and I haave not gone far enough yet :confused: .

BTW thanks Ron for starting this thread for me. A little hard to get one started from where I work.

It should only go in until it is just past the chamfer at the back of the block.
Just enough so it can seal good.

It's in just about a 1/16 past flush.
