OK i'm ready to order the oil system components for my stroker, but i have a few questions first:

1. Do i need any special oil pump or will the Melling stock replacement pump suffice?
I dont need the hi-volume or hi-pressure do I?

2. What type of pan should i use. It is a street driven car, so it cant have some gargantuan 20" sump or anything. I was looking at the Milodon Streep Strip pans in Jegs. Jegs part #697-30900, has a 8 1/4" sump and hold 7 quarts.
I was also lookin at Jegs part #697-30908. It is made for cranks w/ up to a 4" stroke, and is claimed to clear all crossmemebers w/ out any mods.

Anyone want to help me out?

As for the pump a standard Melling M55 will do the trick. If you want, you can do some simple mods that will improve the flow. With a high volume pump most of the oil will be re-circulating inside the pump through the internal by-pass. This will not only heat the oil a lot it will cost power. I understand the new chevy engines use a pump with a 3/4" pickup tube rather than the usual 5/8". Might be worth looking into.

I have Moroso pan and it works like a pan should. So far the oil is still inside the engine

. What ever pan you get, be sure the pickup is the right one for the pan and pump. I lost an engine because of a mis-matched pump, pickup, and pan. A good pan should have some interanl baffling to control the oil and keep it around the pickup screen.

One thing you might want to install is a baffle that mounts between the pump and the rear main cap. It stops the oil from climbing up the back of the pan under acceleration. Cheap and effective. A windage tray will help keep oil off the crank. They come into play over 4000 rpm. A crank scraper will knock the oil off the crank. They work well but take a lot of time to fit.

This is one of the areas that often gets overlooked. There is power to be found here and the cost is minimal. With a 7qt + filter pan you can safely run one quart low and gain some power.

Is it worth the extra $50 to get the pan for the 4" stroke? or just get the regular pan, and pound it a bit with a mallet or something?

I'm leaning toward the regular pan and a hammer.
Anyone?

Matt,
A stock pump M55 w/ Z28 spring will work great.

You don't need the stroker pan. You will not even need to clearance a pan at all with a 3.75 stroke. Just the block and the cam side of rod bolts if running 5.7 rods as you probably already know.

Matt,
Melling has a pump with a little stiffer spring. It is High Pressure, but not High Volume. The number is M55A We have been using them in performance motors mainly because guys seem to want to see a bit more oil pressure.
Cant help you with the pan.

Use the same system that Chevy used on the 7000 RPM LT-1 and Z/28.
Chevy oil pump p/n 12555884
Chevy oil pump screen p/n 3855152
Chevy 302 oil pan p/n 465220
Chevy windage tray p/n 3927136
Chevy mounting bolts p/n 14087508 (need 5)

I substituted ARP studs for the Chevy bolts, but otherwise satisfied with this system. It clears the 3.75 "400" style crank. The pan comes with a gasket set.

Thanks alot guys.
I placed my order with Jegs just a few minutes ago. I got the Milodon pan #30900. It's the anodized gold one with a 8 1/4" sump. I ordered the M55A pump, with the Z28 spring, and an ARP pump shaft.

I do have one more question though.
I want to make sure to get the right pickup for the pan.
The Oil Pump description doesnt call the M55A a hi-pressure or hi-volume, but rather a "Hi-Output".
So when i order the pickup for this particular pan, do i get the Pickup for the stock pump, or the pickup for the Hi-Volume Pump???

thanks

Pickup for a stock pump. The M55A is a standard pump with a different spring. I can't find my Milodon catalog right now. But I'm sure they have a recommendation as to which pickup to use with that pan and pump.

Matt, before you order, make sure the pickup is for that pan. If the pan is deeper than a stock pan, you'll need a longer pickup. Sorry, I should have said that before.

I found the Milodon part number for your application, PN 18311. Jeg's number should be 697-18311. I hope I caught before you ordered.
