I know it cant be just me. Where do you get a new filter, for what seems to be the most commin air cleaner in the world? I have been to all the parts stors and can only find a K&N type element. I just need a cheap paper filter.

Any help is apreciated.

14" open element air cleaner

I bought the Spectre filter (similar to K&N). Either brand is cheaper in the long run because they are reusable. The bonus is that, IMHO, they look good too.

If they're clean enough to look good, they aren't yet filtering properly.

Oiled-gauze filters work best AFTER they've gotten a layer of dirt on them.

Thanks guys. I see the Spectre at Amozon for $15. This may be the one I go with. Thanks again.

as already stated, the Delco A212CW is what you want to crossover to for a 3" tall element.. if the counter jockey wants a year/make/model, tell them it's for a 78 Trans Am with the 400 Pontiac.. i forget the Delco number for the 4" tall element, but the stock application was an early 80's Chevy pickup with the diesel engine..

if that fails, just grab a tape measure and start measuring the elements on the shelf..

Don't worry about the Wix flow ratings they give.I can tell you I have used the 4" for many years on many engines running past 7500rpm with carbs larger than 800cfm and they keep up just fine.. testing on wheel dyno with and without the Wix filter made no difference in HP.

But I did test with air filter base on vehicle.
The Wix filters use the Frazier air permeability test to get the ratings but it does not state at what pressure drop they tested at.

Back in the 1986's I had a quick 1972 cutlass S that I had 2 Fram 13x3 filters on top of the air filter base to make it run best.. If I ran 1 Fram filter it felt like I pulled 3 plug wires off. No power and no top end.
My uncle seen the orange filters!!! and steered me into the Wix direction
I installed 1 Wix filter of the same size all by itself and it felt like the double stacked Fram's.

I was sold and if you have the 2 different filters side by side and look how many pleats the Wix filters have you will understand why they flow more air.

I used to know both Ken & Norm eons ago, first owners and founders of K&N, good guys.

One day, I happened to be in their shop, and smelled their filter cleaner. A week later, I was cleaning a part with straight off the shelf Formula 409, and, it hit me, SAME SMELL. I then called Norm, and he told me "SSSSHHHHH......it's a secret, don't tell anybody, we'd like to keep it a secret".

The filter cleaner cost 3 times what the same amount of Formula 409 cost then.
