I have a huge problem. I just bought a 72 SS that supposedly has a 454 in it. The car originally came with a 402. The engine code stamped on the pad in front reads
TI209IVH 6D140308. I have tried everywhere that I can think of to find out what this engine is. Can anyone help? I can't see the casting number on the back tranny mounting flange.

T=Tonawanda engine plant
1209=Dec 9th engine assembly date
IVH=66 Impala 396/325,L-35 w/holley carb
6=66
D=Doraville, GA. assembly plant
140308=vin sequence number of original car installed in

Keith,
I went out and looked all over the front of the block and the code that I listed above is the only numbers there. The code is in the normal spot on the machined pad on passenger side. I know it is a MK IV block as it has the mechanical fuel pump. The dealer told me it was a 454 and of course it has the correct badges on the valve covers but that would be an easy disguise for a 396 block. sure hope there is a way to find out without yanking the motor! Might be a crate motor from someone I guess, as it doesn't match any 454 or bigblock codes I've been able to find. I've even called several Chevy dealers and they couldn't find it either! What the hell are you mystery motor???!!!

I don't see a CNN prefix for any Chevelles thru 72. Just checked hotbot.com and don't see a listing of CNN for any chevy thru 75. Sorry not much help.

BIC72 CNN = 1970 350 L65 2v carb 250hp with a th350

BIGSARGE: If it is a 1972 chevelle then the 5th digit of the VIN will designate the original engine code. What is the fifth digit in your VIN?

Steve,
my VIN reads 1D37U2K607820. If I read it right it decodes as Chevy, Malibu, coupe, 402, 72, Leeds Assy plant, #607820?
The dealership, Classical Gas Station, in Colorado advertised the car as a 72 SS 402 4spd with a 454 replacement motor in it. Bought it for 15,000. I feel kind of cheated that it has a 66 396 block in it but not much I can do I guess but save for a new crate motor. Is the stroke the only diff between a 396 and 454? if so then I could get a diff crank and rods.

The bore and stroke are different between a 396 and a 454.If the car is nice and you don't have to do any work to it ,then maybe you didn't get ripped too bad.You were just told something that wasn't true.I hate it when someone tries that kind of junk.Anyway,welcome to the best chevelle and the best(IMO)site on the internet.Did you get my email?

If you bought this car from a car dealer and he misrepresented the car in any way, you can take legal action and get your money back if you want to.

I know of such instances happening with things like the year of the car not being right,size of the engine not listed correctly,faulty service records,etc...

They said it was a 72 ss 402 4spd with a tach dash and a 454 replacement motor. What I got was a 72 that was an automatic, and a monte dash with a Sun Tach masking taped into the clock area and after market gauges stuck into holes that had been cut into the dash. Other than the screwed up dash(I have to get a complete new dash harness) the interior is nice. They said it had new paint. No way maybe 2-3 years old. Elkhart green with white ss stripes. I would deal with the dash board problem but the motor thing REALLY pisses me off. Anyone know a good lawyer in Colorado?

If you have those claims in writing anywhere, u have them by the balls. See if you can find a Chevy dealer who will tell exactly what you have, this should be aceptable proof of the fraud. You may have to pay for this.

Contact the better business bureau (BBB) and file a complaint.

If its just your word against theirs, it may be hard to get any satisfaction.
