John,

I doubt it'll be ready and in the Elky for 8 AUG....
18--22 AUG in Mexico...roasting near Cozumel at Playa Del Carmen at some super-expensive resort. Daughter #1's wedding. This is another reason you'll see cast flattop slugs in there and assorted low-buck cast-offs....parts begged, borrowed, or otherwise liberated during the middle of some stormy night.

Just in from the garage....
Looks like the ring end gaps will be .021-.022 top and .024-.025 second
Ideal for this beast would be .017-.018 top and .020-.021.....so plenty safe for mild shots of juice..... Did I say that?

Some instructions on the ring box and some inside. Mostly about the oil ring...not jack-squat about compression rings....just said to put the dot or mark up.
Both rings have white markings....
Looked at some books, searched TC
Got all my markings up, top ring bevel up (circle), 2nd ring bevel down (wedge)

I gotta hit my bud's shop,,,run the piston/rods through his solvent tank.
Will then mount the rings on the pistons.
Then remove the crank, wash the block again....careful attention to the bores.
Liquid laundry detergent and water......ATF for the bores...then more soapy water

Brett,
What do you mean by FINALLY? I built the 427 in RatVette when you were in diapers looking for a boob to nurse on. Look at you now, still looking for a boob to nurse on and I'm building another Rat. Strange.
Some real assembly pics in the next 24 hours...

What works good for me George is to hook up your hose to a hot water line and fill the water jackets with hot water, then wash the block and such, drain the water and fill her back up. It will get suprisingly hot.

Simple green works good for cleaning also.

Just WD40 the surfaces afterwards because as your washing it, it will flash rust on you kind of interesting to watch actually.

Good luck:hurray:

This morning,

Thoroughly washed the block and parts.....

Now I get to do it again because I had forgotten to chase the bolt holes prior to washing
BTW, rust starts forming SECONDS after a good cleaning!

Some of the older hi-perf blocks have reliefs for the valves cut into the top of the bores.....I know I did the ones on the 427.... Talking about a small chamfer where the head gaskets do not cover...hmmmm better not wash the block again til I figure this out.....

Here is Brett's #289 block last year...shows the machining I was talking about

Just if it is worthwhile to do it, "free power" and all, would like to not leave anything on the table.....
I did not see relieving on Kevin's engine either......

I have to admit George, that was a pretty funny one. :D And yes, I am always looking for a boob to nurse.

I do rememember my block clearance. Is it actually neccesary for your cam? I didnt think it was even neccesary for mine. Are you worried about the gasket coverage? I would assume if it seals on mine, it would seal with the same area on yours.

Brians pic is not showing at the moment but I typed in the address into a seperate window and got it to show. His block does not have clearance either.

Might as well go take a dump before you go race:D
Well if YOU had taken one....you'd be "TEN SECOND BrIan." So sorry, you are still "ELEVEN SECOND BrIan"

I have some more wall putty going up...then more garage time....
It is a minor point for sure.....I had been told it was one of those 'things' that separate the good running cars from the average...but this was 30 years ago...

Brett,
A minor point indeed. The old HP book said to relieve near the valves....
I see the factory #289 block has the machined relief....your block.
With the small valves, probably not a problem....
Just 5 or 10 horses for a bottom feeder are important.

Gotta get back to projects...

I didnt do it because I didnt want to lose any compression:D

Why else would I have 94cc chambers:yes:

I am very confident that in 8 days I will have the 10sec slip:yes:

Really not a problem I'm trying to avoid at all.
Just trying to wring a few more horses out of it.
It only takes a few minutes to do.
True, may knock the CR down .1 but if it greatly adds flow...worth it.

Cleaned all the head bolts with dies. What a mess!

If you want more HP then bump up compression and get a bigger bump stick.
New slugs not in the budget this year.....:noway:
Maybe something better in the future

Just throw a little JB weld to the top of the pistons to make a wellfare dome:D J/K Im sure your combo will make a ton of TQ and plenty of HP for your Elky:thumbsup:
Notice how he said "your" elky? :D
