ZZ5 install issue

I have a ZZ5 with serpentine system and am attempting to install it into my 69 Chevelle. Everything was going smoothly until, of course, the last thing I tried to hookup doesn't fix. The power steering pulley hits the power steering box.

Seems odd as I'd assume any late 60s GM would have this same problem. The engine does say it doesn't fit 'all applications' but I figured I was safe.

Its been mentioned on Facebook that I could try a jeep steering box and I'm going to run down and get one tonight to see if that saves enough space. I had it in my plans to slap in a rack and pinion but wasn't really ready to put that kind of dough yet. Plus even the inexpensive unisteer one still means I'd need a new column.

Just wondering if anyone has run into this before or has any ideas? I can post pics tonight if that will help.

Thanks for any assistance!!

Maybe you can check to see if you can change out that power steering pulley for a slightly smaller one or as you say the Jeep box might not be as bulky. How much clearance do you need to make it work?

Does the zz5 come with the long water pump like the zz4? If it does then there have been alot of people who get frustrated getting all that to line up correctly.

The zz4 style engine is popular over at thirdgen.org. Might want to check that out.

Yep, comes with the long pump. I was thinking of just not using the serpentine but then that's a bunch of money down the drain and I need to get a new water pump to boot.

It doesn't need that much room, maybe the combination of a new smaller pulley and a different box will do it. I'll find out tonight and update.

I'll check over at thirdgen for more info.

Thanks!

The easiest fix mentally would be to swap 307 mounts and stands off a 68-72. I'm looking at a serp setup off both a 90 Caprice and a 88 Suburban, a smaller pump pulley would get you at least an inch. Doorman sells a pulley for a v6 Clebrity that I used on my 402 LS build in a 78 Malibu. Just get ready for overdriven ps boost.

What are the 307 engine mounts going to do? Raise the engine or lower the engine? I dont think he stated at what angle the pulley would need clearance. I assumed he needed lateral clearance. I can see where vertical clearance could be done with engine mounts.

What are stand off a 68 - 72?

307 mounts and stands won't change the position of the engine if you use both engine mounts and frame stands.

I just did a Jeep Grand Cherokee update to my 68 elco. You will find the external dimensions of the two units are nearly identical. I would not expect to gain any additional clearance by swapping steering boxes. I use V belts and the mount for the PS pump sits pretty high to clear the box and fluid lines. Smaller pulley is probably the easiest bet. You can always shim the relief valve in the pump to lower pressure a bit.

i think this is a well known clearance issue with oem serpentine setups in these cars. can you gain any room by loosening the engine mount thru bolts and tipping the engine away from that side?

Ok, frame stands make sense.

I used the V belts on my zz4 and it was a major pain to find all the brackets and line ups for the power steering.
