Yet another "whats it worth" questions...

The other day, Isaw a 65 Malibu SS parked on the street... No answer at the door, so I wrote a breif letter with my phone number...

The owner called back:

Original owner, 283, 3-speed manual with buckets. Originally a column-shift, but now floor shift (no console), still has the 3-on-the-tree column (but bad linkage).

Stock, straight body, minimal rust seen (it a California car afterall), really weathered paint (can't even tell if it was blue or silver originally)... The owner couldn't remember the mileage, but well over 200K with a rebuild somewhere along the way years ago). Current registration

I didn't look that closely at it (it wasn't for sale), but I'd assume a 10-bolt. Stock wheels and SS wheel covers, buckets and factory guages (no tach)...

The owner said he wants $6000...

I am loking for a car for my 15 year old nephew (he wants a 64 or 65 Chevelle), and he was looking at a 4-door for $5500 (not really sure what his price range is). Seemed to be a decent project car, but will probably need everything rebuilt.

Just not sure if $6K was a little too high, or a pretty good price now days...

Thanks,
Tony

Plan on $1200-$1500 for a new front end with that kind of mileage. Another $200 for brakes. If you want to put on new rubeer (window, trunk, etc) plan on another $300. Since I haven't seen it and don't know the condition of the engine and tranny it's hard to determine what might need to be done there. I paid $7,500 for a 65 SS 327, 300 hp buckets with console. Body was straight, no rust, poor paint. Spent $2000 for new paint ( which is cheap since my brother the body man did the work).

Pictures would help. Really, that sounds decent enough all the way around.

Why not cruise Ebay and the other online car auction/sale sites. This would at least give you some ideas on the market value for cars in similar condition. As a sidenote: none of the people that I personally know who have bought cars off Ebay would ever buy a car that way again - too many unpleasant surprises.
