What is the deal with window tint from the factory on a 71 chevelle? Is it a good thing to have or was it just an option, I went to a salvage yard today and the dude was acting like it was the best thing since cowl induction.

Someone correct me if I'm wrong. As far as it being an option, I think it was only offered on cars with A/C.

OK, i will correct you! It was offered on all cars, ac or not. It is not rare in the least... In fact, i'd be willing to say its more common than clear glass... at least on a camaro... i looked long and hard trying to find non tinted original glass, and it seems only the cheapest of cheap cars had it.

It was standard on air conditioned cars and a common option on NON-A/C cars. Aftermarket suppliers are still making the tinted glass, so it's readily available. The UN-tinted stuff is what's really hard to get. I know guys who have bought entire parts cars just for the untinted glass. Any local auto glass shop can get you the tinted stuff, brand new.

EDIT: Looks like Joey B answered faster than me, and he's correct. Only the really low-optioned cars got clear glass. I've got one of those "cheap" cars.

Went by the body shop for S##t's and giggle's and my glass is so dirty I didn't bother to check it. So, when I go back to the junk yard to get the back seat from the chevelle I found today, I will let the guy know his "special" glass isn't all that special. The chevelle was a 6 cyl and no a/c by the way. But I did get a few things off of it. Take care guys.
