I've had my 72 now for 18 years. I bought it as a basket case and when I put it together, it was basically an LS5 with a little cam, aluminum intake and a set of headers. My son had a 94 Z28 that he thought might be faster than my car. So for the first time in a couple of decades, I was taking a car to the dragstrip where I spent most of my time in the 70s and early 80s. I outrun him okay but my problem was I ran 13.11, 13.13 and 13.09. Well we all know what that means. Yea, that's right. With just a little tuning, I could get this car in the 12s and I would be happy and never have to go back to the track. Yea, right! I finally got it to run a best of 12.83 which wasn't bad for the combination. But the damage was done. I had been in remission for 20 years but was now infected again. My son persuaded me to punch the engine out, change the pistons, heads and camshaft and see what happened. Well, the bottom line is that now it's mid 11s and I'm currently pulling the engine to stroke it to 496. Why? What's wrong with me? It's not a racecar, it's not a showcar and it's plenty quick enough for a legitimate street car. And if the 496 is what it should be, a rollbar will have to follow. At 56, I should be on my tractor bushhogging, but my family won't cough up the money for a blood transfusion since mine is obviously tainted with 110. There should be a support group somewhere. Thanks for reading and pray for me.

Danny,

Do you think Team Chevelle is "bad" influence? :D Do you think you'd want to build a 496 if it wasn't for this site?

Rod,

I think you make a very valid point. If it wasn't for this site, I wouldn't even know what a 496 was. But my thread was more 'tongue in cheek' than anything else and meant to be lighthearted. Let me make it clear. This site is the greatest tool I've found in a long, long time. Not to mention the fellowship even though it's 99% electronic. I love my hobby and as long as it don't enterfere with my responsibilities, financial or otherwise, then I'm okay with it. As for as the 496, I agree with you 100%. But it was time to go through the engine and it's real easy with the kits and not that expensive. Rings/bearings, I-beam rods, cast steel crank and SRP pistons all balanced and out the door from the local machine shop (Honeycutt Performance) was $1560 including honing and any block clearancing needed.
No, TC has been an influence for sure, but not a bad influence. Thanks.
