Ok, so I'm posting this for my better half so be advised...I'm not a
gear head and therefore this may sound like a complete amateur!

We have a 64 Chevelle with a stock 283 that we installed a Comp Cam kit.
( 262 XTREME ENERGY CAMSHAFT K-KIT )

The car has a Quadrajet carb (4 bbl) and a Weiland intake.

We are considering a Edelbrock 600 performer series carb as the car will now stall at an idle. This is intermittent since the cam upgrade but did not happen before changing it out.

The car has a Powerglide and power steering/brakes.

We bought a Mr. Gasket intake gasket to replace the other one but have not done that yet as we are not so sure that is the problem. Checked extensivly for a vacuum leak and none are to be found. Internal or external.

What Edelbrock carb would you all suggest for this set up? We want one with an electric choke and one fuel inlet.

Suggestions are appreciated!

Well I will start out by saying I prefer the Q-jet over the Edelbrock. So my answer might be biased lol. When you say it stalls at idle is this in gear? When it is warm/cold? All of the time or intermitantly? I am going to assume the carb has been adjusted after the cam swap (curb idle and air/fuel ratio). There is a chance the float level might need to be raised the engine is going to be needing more fuel/air with the cam swap and if it was marginal with the stock cam then the new cam might have put it over the edge. How ever personaly (no real reason other than I have done this lol) I would be looking at the timing. A good starting point for this combo would be 16 degrees BTDC at the crank with 20 degrees of distributer advance and try to have it all come in at around 3000 RPM. This does not include vacumn advance. You will probably need to modify the distributer, if it is stock, to be able to get these numbers. Several people make recurve kits check Summit or Jegs for a start. I just kind of did the shotgun approach as far as answers. If you post some more info it will help us zero in on the answer. David

I run the 500 Eddy on the 283. 600 Eddy seems like too much. I have one and I've never even tried it on the little motor.

Thanks for the reply! The car only dies while in gear coming to a stop sign/light, etc. It is intermittant and does it when warm or cold. One day it did not do it at all.
We have looked at the float and it seems as if it is higher than normal already and my better half is wary of raising it higher and causing fuel problems associated with a to high float level. How much does one raise it to become effective and fix this problem? Just a tiny bit may be ok, I don't know. He has adjusted the carb screws and tried different settings.

He has tweeked the timing, trying to get it right but the problem still exists. I can tell you he knows nothing about altering the distributor or recurve kits. I don't think he will go that far anyway unluss we take it in
to a shop and have someone else do it. I think he just wants a quick fix but I doubt that will happen! We do not have the equipment so a screwdriver and timing light are all we can turn to! I know anytime you change one thing (cam kit) your going to have a waterfall of other changes to get it right! We just do not know what all those changes are.

Thanks for your help!

I think we are going to get it Dyno tested and tuned here locally. The Edelbrock tech said as much and he believed it was not a carb issue as well.

He did recommend the 1403 Performer series 500 Carb if we decide to do a change but we would need a spacer and possibly a fuel regulator.

If it is a timing issue, lets hope they can fix it!

Just as a way of seeing if timing is on the right track. Try bumping the timing up to 16 BTDC and see if it improves. This will probably put you at too much total timing but as long as you drive it normaly there will be no danger of topend detonation. Q-jets are very sensative to float changes-1/16 of an inch change can make a difference. I would call the dyno place and see if you should have a re-curve kit to bring with you. They might have a certain one they like to use. It would also be a good time to check and se what other parts you should bring. It would be a bummer to not be able to complete the session due to no parts. Good luck I would love to hear how it turned out. David

I'd stick with the Q-jet on that engine. it's perfect, you just need a little tuning. what is the timing set at now?
