A friend and I have just bought a 69 chevelle, and we are going to restore it better than original. We have talked about taking the body off and blasting the frame,and have it coated. Do we need some special tools to do this? How can we store the body while there is no frame under it? jack stands, saw horses,??? Any comments would be great.
 
Well, if the body is rust free.....and needs no panel replacement then we'll start with the frame removal. If not...do all the panels while the car is on the frame. Take out the 8 bolts holding the body to the frame. Take everything off of the car that you can
Undo all the wiring and lines. take the front clip (everything from the fenders forward) off. Get as many of your buddies as you can and pick her up. put some 4x6 lumber across some cinder blocks and set the car down on top of them. You can set the car on the ground if you like also. This won't hurt it. then get busy on your frame. You can pick the car up with 2 chain hoists.. One for the front and one for the back. Hoisting points for the front are the body mounts. Points in the back are thru the holes in the trunk floor. take the chains through the trunk floor and attach a 2x4 by drilling a hole in each end, putting the chain through and then boutting a bolt in the end of the chain to heep it from coming back out.
 
I used 4 55gal drums and 6x8 12 ft lumber.The only mod that I had to make was ....being a convertible I had to build bracing across the door openings and also tied them together crossways so there was no body shift at all.It took 6 of us and about 30 secs to get it up in the air 4 to lift and 2 to position the drums and lumber

How much did your rotisserie cost? Does it BBQ? Seriously, a rotisserie would be nice, but not cheap, unless you have your own mig and the metal.

P.S. what kind of prep/primer are you using?

John... It didn't cost me anything. Its home made. It actually belongs to Albert (alss). He and a friend built it for his 70. I borrowed it for 6 months or so to do my 68 resto. It wasn't set up to be turned on it's side. I made the "side legs" so I could strip and paint the bottom of the car body. It's a simple set-up to build.I can send better pics of the legs. When the dolly wheels are on the ground, it's easier to see how it works .
I use Sherwin-Williams paint. It was stripped , etching primer then filler primer and LOTS of sanding. The bottom didn't get the filler primer ,just the etching primer and then the satin black. ..Bill

Is it necessary to gut the interior, or can the body be lifted with everything in tach (asuming all the wires and other connection to the frame have been released)? I'm sure it's a lot heavier and more difficult to lift, but is the weight the only problem?
 
There is no reason for the interior to be removed, as long as nothing is attached to the chassis. Then it's just a weight thing. I use three engine hoists to lift the body up, then role the chasis out from under the body. This way it doesn't matter how much it weighs...
