I have a 72' Malibu with the 307. Stock heads, Edelbrock Performer Cam, Performer RPM Manifold and a Holley 650CFM w/ Vac. Sec. What should I set my initial and total timing to? Any ideas. It is 4 degrees adv. stock.

I have a 70 Malibu with a 307. Everything is stock but I set my initial timing to 8'. Doesnt ping and is a little more responsive. How does your 307 run? I was thinking about doing a few mods.
Everyone that rides in my Chevelle are supprised by the lively response. One last thing I want to do is put some good heads on. My motor has 37000 original miles so the lower half is fine. There is a huge difference with my intake, cam, carb and headers. I'm not sure which heads to go with though. I was thinking about the World products S/R Torquer.
My 307 motor has 54,000 original miles on it. I got it from an 80 year old lady who was the original owner. The only thing I have done to it was put dual exhaust and cool wheels and tires. it runs really well but the larger tires hurt it some. Keep me updated on what you do to yours. I still have not decided if I want to keep it original or add some things.
Adjust you timing by 2 degree higher and go run the car hard. If it does not ping than adjust again by 2 degree. Keep adjusting untill it pings when you are running it hard, then back the timing down by 2-3 degree. You can also replace the springs and weights to get better timing. You can purchase a spring and weight kit from most auto part place. I can usually get 4-8 degree over stock. You can also play with the heat range of your plugs to get more timing and better take off responese. My 71 Chevelle like 1-2 degree over stock hotter plugs, but I was told to go colder on the plugs. My car does not like colder plugs. Hope that helps.
