Well i am down to bare metal and ready to paint the frame. Now the big question what paint to use. I have heard many paint names being tossed around, but which one works out the best? With something like this i just want to do it once and do it right. Any input from been there done that would be a great help.
Thanks,
doug

Epoxy and topcoat with urethane. I've used lacquer top coat as well. Neither has caused disappointments in over 20 years for me or my associates. More cars that I care to remember. 30K miles on undercarriage of one now and still looks fine; and not all driven on gorgeous days either. 9266 over epoxy on the frame and urethane w/ flattening agent on the wheelwells. You'll get many more answers, powdercoat for one.

You need to use a good epoxy primer to etch the frame. You can paint directly over it or use a primer surfacer over the epoxy if you want to do any kind of fill work. As far as the top coat goes my suggestio would be a good quality catalyzed single stage urethane or you can go basecoat clearcoat. Alot depends on what your plans are for the car and budget. Make sure you get a reputablke paint brand such as BASF (RM),Dupont, PPG, Sikkens, or Sherwin Williams. Hope that helps.

I plan on using Dupont Corlar 2k epoxy coating. It was recommended by the paint and body tech at work. It looks like a good product. Can be left as is or topcoated according to tech, I will most likely top caot it though.

hey doug, i'm not sure about the paint to use but was wondering if you thought about powder coating the frame. i did a frame off on my 70 and took the frame to get it sand blasted and powder coated and couldn't be happier. i actually got the frame down to metal and decided at the last minute to go a different way and in my opinion that was the best way to go. it wasn't as expensive as i thought it would be and the frame gets coated inside and out. just thought i would toss that your way. good luck with whatever it is you decide.

Depends where you live. From what I've seen from other members on here prices vary from downright inexpensive to outrageous. Place in CT wants $650+ (not saying that price is outrageous) to do a frame but I've seen other members from other parts of the country get sandblasting and powdercoat for under $300.

also depends on who you know....mine was sandblasted and powdercoated for 4 cases of beer and a bottle of Captain.

I had my frame sand blasted also and was going to put Por 15 on it but went and power coated it instead and I'm very happy I did. It looks great and you can touch it up with Cardenal Paint to match your color, I used a semi gloss black.

Good luck with your project.
