Im going to look at this guys warehouse full of SBC/BBC stuff and he says he's got a few sets of SBC/BBC heads that are in good shape ready for a build up along with some blocks too.

Which castings are desireable and which are junk for a 500hp mild hydraulic cam'd 454-496 build up? Thanks guys.

215, 290 and 063's are good castings as well. They have similar ports plus semi-closed combustion chambers. It's easier to get compression up with these, but they need a bit of chamber work to unshroud the valves to get them on par with the open chamber 781 and 049 castings.

188's are a good choice for rectangular port heads, these are open chamber LS-6 replacement type.

It all depends on what you're doing.......I have spent the past 3 months trying to find the best rectangles to make 700 HP with........The answer was NONE OF THEM!!!!! I bought some Merlins....and still yet I might not make it!!!!! However, I'm limited to 475 cubes. (aluminum was not an option for me)

AFR 305's are what I wish I could run.........

A............

Get the 215 anyway! They're getting hard to come by and you can find another one out there someday. Like treasure hunting!

If you were closer, I'd set you up with a set of 781's cheap but the shipping would be outrageous and then add the machine work, springs, valves - you might as well buy some aftermarket heads. I have 3 sets of 781's and don't need more than one set.

I went today to see the guy and he has some good stuff! He has a set of 215,781 and 049's ready to bolt on. They are ready and not in any way dirty or have been ran. They just had valve jobs and they are unported and unmolested which is great to hear!

On a other note, there were the big 990 rectangular port heads too! I have never seen a 990 casting before and was very suprised. He also had a classic SY1 (smokey yunick cross-ram) intake. I've never seen one either and it was in good shape and unmolested also.

Whats a good asking price for the 781's? He wants $700 and they have stock springs, new replacement valves, but everything else is redone to stock. Are they a nice set of heads for a future mild 496 build up?

$700 sounds a bit high, aftermarket steel heads are probably $1200-1500 ,aluminum are closer to $2000.The 990 head would be very similar to the 188,how much is he asking for those ?? Although aftermarket steel heads would be rectangular port, not oval.

If its a " Future " build them IMHO I'd wait till I found a deal.

$700 may not be completely outrageous..........but not a deal.

just noticed the shipping distance between your guys (fat nutz and troy)...about twice the distance I mentioned. Not sure if that would double the shipping too. I'll just be quiet now :boring:

You might consider a pair of 269 cc Merlin cast-iron ovals??

Or check into the CHEAP 320 cc aluminum rect port heads Powerhouse sell's...

I wouldn't consider them race heads, but for the price, still good value for aluminum heads to me..

Paul,i see thats the best, cheapest route actually. The oval merlins are fairly resonable and will make the power im after. My car is 90% street and only sees the race track 2 times a year. I'll probobly consider the Merlins bare and do some minor work/porting and different springs for my combo.

If i do happen to come across some good heads for cheap,i'll pick em' up without a second thought. I hate being so spontaneous!:D
