What Distributor setup is best for EFI? (FAST EZ-EFI 2.0)

Hello,

Before I get started on installing the EZ-EFI 2.0 system, I wanted to get thoughts on what is best for distributor. Here are the choices:

1) Current Setup - MSD Distributor, MSD 6AL, MSD Coil
2) FAST Distributor
3) Custom Curved DUI Distributor

Let me know your thoughts. I have a 496bbc for the street. So cruising characteristics are just as important as idle and WOT.

Are you intending to eventually go with timing control too? Does that model FAST offer it? If you are doing timing control does that change the list of supported distributors?

I would think what you have now is a reasonable setup for standalone ignition and would be compatible with timing control with many of the other systems if you installed a lockout kit. I have not looked at FAST for years so no idea what it takes to do timing control with them these days.

If you don't already own the FAST setup, I'd suggest taking a good long look at some of the other EFI options out there. Just from my reading on this and other forums, FAST's support sounds less than stellar, and I'm not sure how well their systems will self-tune like the newer ones will.

To your specific question about distributors, your current MSD setup (#1) should be compatible with a lot of systems. It could be used as-is in a fuel only setup, or be re-configured to be locked out and used with a timing control setup. You said street manners are important, so you really want to include timing control in your plans.

I'd only do #2 if you already own your FAST EFI setup. But if you already own the FAST, this could make timing control available very easily. As a comparison, it's the same price as the dual-sync distributor Holley recommends for their setup.

I don't think I'd bother with #3 at all. Sounds like money spent with not much to show for in results. If you go fuel-only, your current MSD distributor can likely be re-curved as needed.

I cannot emphasize enough, use whatever system you think you can get the best support for whether that's from internet forums, your friends, or your local dyno shop.

I do already own the EZ EFI 2.0 system.

So upon further review, the new FAST Dual Sync Distributor (link above) has fixes to some of the older problems. They also came out with their E6 Digital CD Ignition Kit (with coil) to work with the EZ EFI systems.

I know it's a magazine, but Super Chevy did an install of all the new components and turned out well for them on a 496bbc like mine. I am sure FAST sent them the new Ignition box and coil instead of their old MSD box. They mention switching it out to the FAST stuff, but who knows if there was real reason to: How to Install a FAST EZ EFI 2.0 on a Big-Block Chevy Engine

Anyway...maybe the new improved components from FAST make it easier for all the systems to work nicely together....

The dual sync dist solves a lot of issues that people who are not experienced in setting up timing control may have. If you have never installed it before and want timing control then that Dist. will work well for you. It has lights setup to help install it correctly.

I posted my prefered dist for timing control and it is not for everyone. I had to remove my intake so I will have to redo it all over again lol, I may make a how to video this time if I can get the camara battery to stay charged and find some one to operate it while I am working.
