Hi guys, I need to replace my HEI Dist. Do you think the MSD Pro-Billet would be way overkill?? Or should I just get one of those Summit GM HEI replacement type ones with the 50,000 volt coil for $140.00??

The car is mostly street driven, but I hope to get it to the track some too..

Here is my current combo,Combo:

· 396 Bored .040 over
· 9.7 : 1 Compression
· 702 Heads with 3 angle grind, bronze guides, & hardened seats
· Speed Pro Forged Pistons (part # L-224ONF)
· Eagle SIR I Beam Rods
· Comp Cams XE274H-10 - .552 .555 / 230 236
· Comp K-kit (matching valve springs ect.)
· Harland Sharp Roller Rockers (1.7 Ratio)
· Holley 700 Double Pumper
· Performer RPM Intake
· GM HEI Distributor
· MSD 6AL Ignition Box
· Hooker Super Comp. Headers (1 3/4”primary’s)
· Muncie M-20 Tranny / 3.73 –12 bolt posi

As always, thanks in advance for your help..
Scott

Scott,
What is wrong with the HEI ? It looks like you are running an MSD box, so the HEI is really only used for its magnetic trigger. Cant think of much to go wrong with it.

I second the HEI. What is wrong. If you are using the MSD box you just use an external coil and eliminate the stock coil. The only thing that can go wrong with the HEI is the mag. pickup and they are cheap and easy to replace.

Hahaha! I had to check your 10-20s to see if you guys really knew each other.

Scott, if the engine bay is somewhat original looking, I always recommend Dave Ray's service. Rebuilds, curves and retrofits HEI into an old small base unit. Mine is acutally only an MSD trigger. I'll carry an HEI module as backup. Around $145 all in with a core. That and Taylor universal wires with 180 distributor boots and you;ve got a "stock" look that will fire well to 7000+ rpm. No maintenance.

Looking stock is NOT a concern, I'm really just wondering if the MSD Pro-Billet would be worth the coin.. I just dont want to drop an extra 100 bucks just to get the shiney distributor.. Although I'm kinda of leaning that way just because it is a real clean setup, & it would just plug into my 6-AL box..

PS, hey Mike :p I don't here from you in a week & you pop up just to slam me  .. Oh wait, I forgot who I was talking to :D

Thanks for the reply,
Scott

I'll let you know about Southland, I was thinking of going to Jeff's cottage for the night (although I'm leaning towards NOT going)..
