I have been wanting to build a sand rail for some time. I have researched the subject as much as I can but I can't seem to find what I want. I want to be able to use a 350 engine and TH350 trans I have from my Chevelle which are now just taking up space. I got a catalog from an outfit in California that sells all of the parts needed. The problem is they build around the typical VW engine and transaxle. What I want is more like the kits shown in the following link.

They are called sand rockets. They mount the engine and trans as they would be in a car. I would buy this kit if it weren't so darn expensive. A frame and suspension are $10k. Does that sound reasonable for what appears to be a rollcage on wheels? It doesn't to me. The outfit that makes the VW based kit sells a frame for $800. If I installed a V8 up front there would not be room for 4 seats.
There is another maker I found that uses LS1 and Northstar engines but I don't like the fact that the engine hangs way rear of the axle making the car lift its front wheels easily. I would think that would get old, if not dangerous after a while.

These are about $10k as well for the four seater that I would want. Does anyone happen to know any other sand rail maufacturers that cater to the V8 crowd or maybe alternatives for sourcing the basics - frame, suspension pieces??
