I just aquired what I was told is a 409 W head engine. Casting # is 3857656 and the heads are 3819333. I'm thinking this is a truck block but can anyone here confirm this or tell me the best way to indentify. I did the google research but just got confused:confused: Dip stick is on the passenger side. Also is the piston bore size the same for a truck and car engine. I got this engine in pieces.
Thanks
Steve

The 348/409's had distinctive "W" shaped valve cover's,heres a link to some pictures;

Here are some specs;

And I'm not 100 % certain,but I think that the passenger car engines & the truck engines shared the same block.Heres your block;

Heres the head;

Thanks for the info. Its definetly a W head engine. Here's a good one. The bore for a 409 is 4.3125 yet the pistons measure 4.002". I have the heads sitting on the engine right now. I'll pull one off and measure the actual bore. Thanks again.

May be a 348? Same W-shaped valve covers/heads. Both 348 and 409 used in trucks and passenger cars.

Maybe a set of small block pistons got mixed into the parts.

The 348 pistons are 4.125 in.

The 348 bore is 4.125". I'm thinking along the same lines a Guy. Probably small block pistons. I'll have to measure the bore to know for sure.

All the correct info you need is at 348-409.com :yes:
These guys will give you all the correct info you need unlike the guesses that you are going to get here. I was into the 348 and 409 stuff for awhile and was a member over there.
The 348-409 engines are not called "W" engines because of the shape of the cylinder head / valve covers. :noway:
Join them, good guys to talk with. The guy that owns that board is member here. Bob, has installed a 409 into a 1966 Chevelle SS.

Also,
if the cylinder heads are off, there are fly cuts at the top of each cylinder bore on a truck block to lower the compression, A truck block uses a different style water pump.

Thanks I checked the site out. I measured the bores and its a 409. It has the compression cut outs so it be a truck engine. The heads have 1.94 intakes too so that confirms the truck status. Might need a couple of turbos to deal wiht that low compression...

I was thinking the dipstick is on the driver side on a 348 and on the pass side on a 409.
Of course, this is assuming the oilpan hasn't been swapped...they will interchange between the two engines.

#13 ·
Yup. Mines on the passenger side.

Steve,
348/409 pistons are very distictively shaped because the combustion chamber is the block. They have an unusual shaped dome.

Are there any type of numbers on the pistons inside or on top ? You need to make sure that the rest of the parts are all for the 409 too. That block number does come up as a 409 in everything I have.

Can't say that I've seen one but haven't really looked either. Where would I find it. I pretty much surmised what you have too. Now I just have to decide what to do with it. Being its a low compression truck engine I'm thinking it might be a good candidate for a little extra pressurized air... or I might just paint the valve covers and leave it on the stand for a while:D

T0524XXG on the block and the pistons have Z18 stamped on the top

You need ANY information about 409's call Lamar Walden at Lamar Walden Racing. I think he still hold the title "fastest 409" He is the one that engineered the new 409 heads for Edelbrock. Lamars number is (770) 449-0315

#21 ·
Right on. I've heard of him. Thanks for the info.

#23 ·
Thanks Mike, they are decent blocks though aren't they?

There is a girl from Penna?? that drives a Red 62 Hdt. with a 409. The car has to look stock. The top of the engine has the 409 look,,, The bottom end is a 454 style rotating Assmb. and It is around 500 inches.
I saw the engine at the shop that built my 468. I believe her 62 Hdt. has some glass parts on it.
The guy at the shop says she wins a lot of races. Anyone ever see this Red 62-409? run anywhere. I dont know much about it other than the 409 looking engine was built in Beaver Falls, Pa.

Just sitting on my engine stand for now. Thinking of painting the valve covers.

Ya sorta...not that I can afford one...

Its all apart Mike and not a runner...If I pursue this thing I could see it being a $10,000 load of hurt to my fragile ego which I don't want to do right now. It bought it to save it from the metal bin. My service writer's dad had it for almost 30 years and mama said get rid of it. History, nostalgia and all that crap...

I had a 62 409 Impala for a while. The parts are a little on the expensive side and you are correct I could easily see a lot of money spent making the 409 run as well as a BB Chevy. Ironically the 396/402 I have for my Chevelle, was bought to replace the 409 in the Impala.
