I just read this little clip from another forum http://www.nastyz28.com/forum/showthread.php?t=56505:
"The turbulence speeds the spread of the burn, but in a random and uncontrollable fashion. Requireing maybe 34-38 degrees ignition timing lead. Better, but still not great. This is all heads built prior to the early 90's. And, most aftermarket heads, which are "tweaked" copies of "old fashioned" production heads. Now consider the Vortec head with its predictable and repeatable swirll patterns. Faster burn rate than our previous examples, requireing even less timing lead, about 30-32 degrees".
I have vortec heads and have been playing with timing.
I hear alot of this on the forum "bump up your advance untill you hear it ping then bring it down a few degrees". Is getting the most advance out of your motor without pinging really the best performance setting?
I have vortec heads on a fairly mild set up and have wondered if I should be brining the timing down to 32-34 degrees.
My cam is so small "XE262" that it really idels/starts fine no matter where I set the timing.
Just curious on everyone's opinion.

Thanks guys for the input!
So second question here. What is the best timing to have at cruising for the interstate? I have a 700R4 so I only turn like 2,200 RPM. I am attempting to figure out how to adjust my vac canister and dist spring rates.

Sorry, I have to work too, can't be on every minute of the day...........

I never did much with that. Now, it's done with my ECM.
*Pisst* I'm at work too! :p
But I still jump over to check my thread every few hours!
I know I have my car currently set up with like 36 and with the dist hooked up around 52 all in. I'm not sure if you should be shooting for the 50ish range while cruising for good milage or if that is too much.
Basically I want to balance some performance while knocking down decent milage at 2200 RPM on the interestate.

Just to update the thread......... the change from 36 down to 32 was good advise. I played with the car and my off idle acceleration is much better. It seems to be pulling much better in the low-mid powerband. Crazy that a little REMOVED timing can really help out a vortec motor.
