I am trying to determine proper pushrod length for the 496.
Having a terrible time trying to make and read marks on the valve tips to find the narrowest sweep.
Starting with a pushrod length that eyeball's as close to 90* as I can see at midlift, I have been adjusting shorter and longer and comparing results. Watching the total lift change as well.
Total lift is measuring almost .050" more than the cam card says it should, I assume that will be lost when there is actual spring pressure and deflection and such. Maybe that was because the dial indicator wasnt perfectly parallel to the valve stem.
Hydraulic roller cam .660 lift (and lifters)
lightweight checking springs
adjustable pushrods
-I tried magic marker, it doesn't leave any marks.
-Read somewhere try a light smear of ARP assembly lube, that leaves a mark, but it doesn't seem accurate as it lacks repeatability. I'll do the same measurement six times and not have consistent results. Might get .065 then .080 then .050 without making ay changes. Very hard to read, seems to get smudged removing the rocker arm to look at it. Tried various amounts as well.
-Tried dry erase marker on valve tip, marks looks great but it seems to give overly narrow marks, I don't believe the sweep is only .025" when the other measurement shows more than double that.
Any tips for marking the valve stem tips so I can see the rocker pattern?
The nifty homemade valve retainer with a mount for a dial indicator looks awfully handy right now.
