Valve cover problem

What type of performance issues would happen if my valve covers are too small for my roller rockers set up? The problem is I bought some Anson valve covers really nice ones that have the 396 on them. so I put them on but the baffle on those have a small hole the allows my PCV valve to suck up oil which causes alil smoke at 80 mph. I took the Valve cover baffle out and put in the grommet baffle but didnt help bcuz they just made more smoke come out the PCV and the breather and even the oil dipstick. I think the grommet are to snug. anyway I put my stock Valve covers back on, ran it and it seems to no accelerate at all. but I cant here it knocking

If you've got visible smoke coming out everywhere it's likely a ring seal issue that needs taking care of. If your rockers aren't making any noise you probably have enough clearance and the problem is elsewhere. I use the FelPro thick gasket with standard height covers and full rollers and have no problem.

thanks for the reply, I have about 300-400 miles on my rebuilt engine. when i first got it back from the machine shop I didnt notice it smoking, seems to be doing it alil more now. Do ring seals tend to smoke at idle after a 10 - 15 min drive??

The most important thing is to keep track of how much oil is being used and how maney miles it takes. Its normal for a fresh engin to burn oil untill the rings seat properly and dont use synthetic oil for the first 3-5k then switch over.1 quart every 1 thow would be ok but should slow down over time by 5k.

I had the same type of problem on a Mopar engine at one time and it turned out to be an incorrect PCV valve. It wasn't sized properly for the engine and it was sucking oil off of the valve train and sending it back into the intake plenum. Lots of smoke! If the PCV valve is the correct one, make sure it is functioning correctly and not sticking. Just a thought....

just getting back. I changed to the grommet baffles and replaced the pcv valve I had in there, seems to not be doing it as much. if it is, its not noticable. just hope that it doesn't start on me again........
