Updating my 454 combo.

Last July, I had a solid roller lifter fail on my 454, destroying the cam and sending metal throughout the engine. I originally had this engine built 19 years ago, and have had it apart at least 6 times in 19 years. Each time was due to a solid roller valve train failure and the contamination that goes along with it.

I finally conceded that most of my failures could be traced to me not annually inspecting the lifters and not checking the lash often enough.

I have wanted to swap to a hydraulic roller setup and aftermarket aluminum heads for years now. Unfortunately it seemed like every time I had a valve train failure, money was tight and I just wanted it back on the road, so I ended up just fixing what I had to and staying with the solid roller, even though it was not the best fit for me.

This time I decided to save my money and make all the upgrades I have been wanting to do. I contacted Wolfplace a few months back and have been picking his brain about cylinder heads. I ended up ordering a set of 110 cc Brodix RR 270s with cnc chambers from him too replace my worked GM 990s.

About the same time I began seeking Wolfplaces advice, I began seeking Chris Straubs advice on camshaft and lifter selection. I ordered my cam and lifters from Chris last week also. Both Mike and Chris have been great, answering all of my questions [lots and lots of questions] over the past few months both on the phone and in emails. I can hardly wait to get the parts, put it together and see how it runs !!!

I cannot recall if you ran the previous at the track
BET the new combo rocks!

I held back on my rectangle port heads until I had more cubes below than 454 ;)

I got my Brodix RR 270's with the cnc chamber option milled to 110cc from Mike Lewis a few weeks back, and just got my Morel 4603's and custom hydraulic roller cam from Chris Straub last week. Both were fantastic to deal with and I highly recommend both of them. I am now starting to assemble the engine. I got the cam degreed in and piston to valve clearance checked last night. Tomorrow I will figure out the proper push rod length and get them ordered up.

I finally finished assembling the engine last week. Today i was able to get it put on the test stand and fired up. I will dial it in tomorrow. If there is any interest I will post a video of it running.

Got the engine installed this weekend. I was able to take the Chevelle for a short drive tonight. I can't say enough good things about Chris Straub, Scott Foxwell , and Mike Lewis. This thing is an animal !!! I will now have to install a rev limiter, as it revs so quick it was at 7000 before I could shift it, and the shift light comes on at 6500 !!! The only hicup on my initial test drive today is my brand new GM Performance parts valve covers have a porous spot and the right one leaks right in the middle. I will be exchanging them at summit tomorrow for another pair.
