Hey guys,
I went U joint shopping and am having a bear of a time finding the right ones. My drive shaft has the original u-joints in it. I know they are original b/c they still have the plastic retainers that have yet to be melted out. Anyhow, I went to Oreilly auto parts and they show that I need part number 269 Percision U-joint. Luckily I had the drive shaft with me and when I put the cap of the new U-joint to the cap of the old one, the new one was significantly smaller. So we searched around and found that a U-joint from a 1972 1/2 ton Chevy van appears to work. The cap sizes are the same. I bought 2 of them. Part number 534G Percision. Well to make a long story short...I find it odd that the joints listed for both 69 and 70 chevelle are wrong. Did different drive shafts have different U joints? The van u joints are the correct size for the transmission end (so for I think they are anyway), but I haven't changed out the joints in the shaft yet. The rear end is another story. I took one of the Ujoints and trial fitted it to the pinion yoke. It fit, however there are 2 "tangs" or raised pieces that are cast into the yoke that keep the joint from seating. It appears that these tangs center the joint and keep the caps from flying off under centrifical force. Long story short, I have one cap that looks to be what I need and one that does not. The caps on the rear one look like they need to be narrower. Here is what I have drive shaft wise.
My car is a
1969 Chevelle
454
th400
Original 69 12bolt
My Drive shaft is a
1970 Chevelle drive shaft.
396/350 hp
th400
12 bolt
Drive shaft measures 54 inches from center of cap(differential end) to center of cap transmission end.
So my question is, what Ujoint do I need to make this work?
