I bought a nice 70 ls6 for a reasonable deal this year. Alright I go to insurance co. and pay $600 for antique plates. Now I cant wait to get this car on the road after waiting 25 years to get a chevelle again. I run across the street to the registry - wait an hour , get to the counter, pick up my antique plates and this is where all hell breaks loose. The lady stares at me looks at her screen then back at me and says how do you want to pay for this. And I say cash of course. I have $5000 on the back of the title! o.k. she says $20 to register $50 for title and $4300 sales tax. Your kidding right. Oh no we go by N.A.D.A. $86000 avg. retail. Now I'm not complaining because its nice to know they go for so much. But mine is no way worth that kind of money. I was able to talk her down a little. But the kicker is when I turn around to leave she says with a smile good luck with your exise tax bill this month. Man, I just want to get this car on the road before gas hits $4 a gal. Anyway I'm glad to belong with chevelle owners, Dave

Ya I starting thinking that and backpeddeling while talking to her the first thing she said is the plate I got says LS 6. The second thing she said is do you want your title to say malibu or chevelle ss like it did when I was standing there. I got her to charge me for chevelle ss $42000 book value

at $4300, i would have opened a p.o. box in another state and registered it there, i would have looked at a lot of options, like register it in a relitives state, after all this thing won't be on the street enough for somebody to figure it out. even in cali it would have costs less than 600 to register.....where did they get 86k, do you actually register it as an ls6? how do they possably know what chevelle you have? that is abosolutely b.s.!!!! what is it going to be yearly? man, you took this way better than i would have, for $4,300 there should have been some naked ladies involved, sheesh.....

The $600 is for 50k. worth of insurance. Under the N.A.D.A. value book it says $42k for ss and add 95% for ls-6. I was able to talk her down to the ss value of $42 k even though the plate says LS 6

Hey, I dont want to complain , got a good deal on a awsome ss, Just the price of owning one. Its just that back in the day when I had one insurance companies killed ya for owning this type of car now 35 years later they and the registry here in mass are still at it . They suck thats all

Glad I don't live in MA anymore! Here I just handed her the title, she put the vin in (13637xxx) the computer and voila, '71 Malibu. "Yes Maam, '71 Malibu". It was like $34.00 total! My plates read: 71 LS5. I guess you gave her too much info.

It woulda cost me under $100 to transfer title and renew registration, but then again - I'll probably never own an ls6!

The guy who paid for new registration for my 68 goat conv. got out of the alabama DMV for under $20. :D

Doing the "malibu" thing when it's a "real ss" will it affect anything when or if it's ever totaled or stolen? Like, you say when it's stolen or wrecked..."yes, it's a LS6" and the insurance adjuster says, "but it says Malibu on your registration and title".

Gee, what's the chances of running into a lady working at the Tag office that would even know what a LS6 is???

The ones down here didn't even know what an El Camino was...

My 72 El Camino tags cost $32 for 2 years, insurance is $180 for 12 months and it is emission exempt. Is your LS6 going to pass the sniffer test in your state?

Did you need to provide pictures of the car? Here, if its on the "high value" list, you need to send pictures, and they send a bill for the balance over the standard ~$40 for a car that old.

It will be emission exempt in mass. it just has to pass a safety inspection. I wanted the title to say what the car is, an ss .The title that was given to me states its an ss. They go by book value in mass even though I put that I bought it for $5k. which I didn't. They go buy what is higher, book or selling price. I got her to go with standard ss ,$42k. book. She said it doesn't matter wether its all apart on your garage floor or running. Great huh

No pictures Derek. After being told I had to pay 5% of $86k I was glad to get out of there on 5% of $42k. I realy wanted a plate that had ls6 in it. How did I know their p.c. would tell her what it was worth, Dave

You DEFINITELY should have gotten a notarized appraisal stating the true value on the car, and paid the tax on that. There's NO WAY the gov't. should be able to set value on something they know absolutely nothing about.

We have that here in MD. I went round & round and finally had to get a notarized bill of sale to prove the purchase price of my Tahoe. Make a good deal and they still try to rape you with book value.

We pay personal property tax on vehicle license in Az, difference is they go by the manufactures list price and depreciate that over time. The list price on your LS6 was probably around the $5000 you declaired, going by market value is a rip off. How do they figure property tax on your home?
