I am putting a muncie together from parts just to do it...I figure I can build an engine I need to be able to do a trans too. Anyway I have a good case and a used gm gear set that looks to be in great condition...most of the engagement teeth still look pointed, but I don't know what normal wear is really. It is a 26/32 trans so the gear set is no more than 40 years old..lol Anyway was gonna buy new synchro hubs and sliders but do not know if I need to use torque lock or standard. I can take pics later of the gears and post them. I know a torque lock on a new gear can cause trouble down shifting...or so I've read. With used gears is it usually a safe bet to use the torque locks or does it just depend? will it cause problems if I use them and I don't really need them?

Also are the synchro assemblies found on ebay for $60-$80 bucks each junk? The ones I am refering to do not come with brass just the loaded assembly. I don't want to spend a fortune but don't want to put it together with garbage either.

You can see the wear on those gears, and that transmission has standard GM sliders in it. The third gear section has a factory torque lock groove, but the other three gears are standard. The only time it's popped out of gear was after a launch with a lot of wheel hop. That transmission would be what some might call junk, but it's power shifted when I've leaned on it and it hasn't popped out of gear but the one time. I'd probably just use some excellent used sliders. That's what is in the transmission pictured above.

If torque locks are what you have your heart set on I would get a set of Jody's matched hubs/sliders. From what he has posted just throwing torque locks on standard hubs isn't the best way to go. The slider can have excess rock on the hub, and that can cause a block out type condition.
