my 69 nova 396 with M.T. slicks currently averages 60ft.1.632-330ft. 4.824- 1/8 7.528-mph. 90.68- 1000ft. 9.879-1/4 11.888- mph. 111.82 . car develops approx. 600hp. shifting turbo 400 at 6500rpm. crossing finnis at 6400rpm. thru dana 60 with 4.88 gears. how will increments change by replacing m.t. 29.5x10 slicks with 26x10 tires? thanx-gary

well it would turn more rpm, hard to say what it would do to times, does it act like it needs more gear? I will aslso say you don't have anywhere close to 600hp since it is only running 111 mph. My z runs mid 90's in the 1/8 and my car weighs 3600lbs. If it responds to the shorter tire, then you need more gear.

i shouldn't say it doesn't have 600 hp, I don't know what the car weighs but them things are pretty lite and the mph indicates that it doesn't unless something is really holding it back. What stall are you running? Need more engine specs, if indeed it is a 600 hp 396, I can't see it doing it at that rpm level, I would guess it would have to run over 7000 rpm or more to do it, unless you have nitrous on it.

the 396 bored +.030 heads ported&polished - comp cam-xr286 - comp. ratio 12,5-1 - valves 2.19 in. 1.73 ex. vic jr. intake-holley 850 dp. stall is 4500 dyno 2000[computer dyno} shows hp. peaking at 641 at 7500rpm torque peak-580 at 5000 rpm. i know these are'nt firm numbers but its the best i can get until the land&sea dyno gets fixed. thanx for the reply- just wondering how times will change regardless of dyno estmates. p.s. footbrakin 3500 rpm at launch. thanx again for any guesstimates

seems to me you need more gear, you aren't getting to the power by running at 6500, but a dyno 2000 may be inflating the numbers some. I would try some higher shift points and see what happens, hopefully some other members will chime in on this. Should be a very stout engine I would think, but not real familiar with 396's. What are the actual specs on that cam? With that compression you could go quite large I would think.

I wouldnt think many big blocks would need gears that steep. If I can get a 1.51 with my heavy chevelle and 3.73's, I might be looking at a converter swap??? Or an intake swap, we need a few more Vic Jr./ RPM swaps to get this figured out :D

cam specs-intake lift.653 exhaust lift.660 duration at .o15 tappet lift intake 286 exhaust 292 installed at 106 intake centerline. dur. at .050 intake 248 exhaust 254. would still like to know how tire change from 29.5x10 to 26x10 would effect e.t. thanx gary

thats a big cam, about what I run in my 454 and I shift around 6800. I would think if you need more gear, which you really shouldn't, it will jelp, but more than likely they won't hook and will hurt. Just ry them and find out, unless you have to buy them. Are you running out of gear before the quarter?

hitting finnish at 6400 but not sure that its pulling hard- i notice once i hit 2nd gear &start checking gauges that the fuel pressure is down from 6lb to 3lb. could i be starving for fuel & not know it? holley red wiyh no regulater. thanx again gary

holley red? That is not a very big pump for a big block. I would get some bigger lines and a mallory 140 or a holley black. I think you should rename your post and ask for wolfplace or a moderator to help you, they know much more than me.

Switching to the 26" tires will slow your 60's to 1.7 something I would think, plus with a 4.88 gear I think it would be too much and you will run out of power with that cam.

Your fuel pressure dropping to 3 lbs during a run is bad. it needs to be at 6 psi the whole way. Youd probably be fine with a holley blue pump and regulator, but it doesnt hurt to have more.
