After setting up my timing I started engine and had a load back fire , rechecked timing and found distributor 180 off ,corrected this and started car but won’t start, looks like a little oil popped out the top of carburetor when cranking .has anyone had this problem, tomorrow well go over everything again and see if I messed up something

When I was trying to start I advanced and retared timing ,do you thing I blew a hole in one of my pistons ( they are forged)

indeed NEVER ASSUME. If you need to pull a valve cover to ensure the #1 valves are both closed and its not 180 out, do so.

Took my time today and removed #s 1,2,4,6,and 8 spark plugs to ease barring engine over removed left side valve cover. Started ratcheting engine ,number 1 cylinder exhaust opened and closed then intake opened and closed, stopped at tdc removed distributor cap and rotor was 180 away from pointing to number one cylinder, reset distributor so rotor points to # 1 cylinder , set engine to 10 degrees initial, reassembled and pow engine started, what a relief.
Thanks everyone for advice and patience

TDC and rotor pointed at number 1 cylinder has never let me down yet. Glad you got it fired
