I've had nothing but Edelbrocks my entire life, with fairly good success. Always having daily driven street cars or trucks, slightly aggressive, but still in fact a daily driver. Currently I have an Edelbrock #1405 600CFM on a 454, 30 over, roughly a 461ci, the compression is about 10.5-1 at most, air gap intake manifold, recently converted to a 4 speed as well. It seems to have taken a dive, I've tuned, neighbors have tuned, I just don't have any passion for this Carb anymore. I'm looking for a couple alternatives, I don't drive the car daily so I am not concerned about mileage or anything. Just looking for something with very few problems and good power for this application. What Holley's would be good, or even another Edelbrock? Is the CFM too low on this 1405?

Thanks

I see so many used Holleys, they are cheap. Whats the story on those? Should I steer clear or look out for something? I was looking at 750 Double Pumpers, that sounds good...

I love an 850 Holley Douple Pumper for a bbc weekend warrior! Carbs are one of those topics where you will get differing opinions from everyone. I say for the money, the ease and simplicity of tuning, and consistent performance, a Holley is great. I prefer a double pumper to a vac secondary as I like to have control of when the secondaries open and I feel they are easier to tune to your application. However, lots run the vac sec units with great track/performance results.

Yeah nice.... I remember when I made the change from Windows to Mac 4 years ago, I feel like I'm doing that now with Edelbrock to Holley :) Hah. Both worlds are cool but it's different for all, I'm pretty stoked to try something new. From what I'm reading I am leaning towards a 750, I'll look up the street Avenger, I remember those... it's been a while since I've been part shopping. As far as the rearend, it's the only thing I haven't changed out or upgraded I still have a stock 10 bolt, of course when and if money prevails I am swapping to a 12 bolt posi.

I personally would stay away from vacuum secondary carbs ! especially if your a rookie at tuning holley carbs . soemtimes it hard enough to get rid of leanbogs , not to mention recovery leanbogs .

Good news is ANY HOLLEY YOU CHOOSE WILL PUT A SMILE ON YOUR FACE !

Yeah thats good news, I would be new to Holleys so thats a good tip...

I had a 850 edelbrock on My 71 402 car.I tried to dial it in for 2 months with no luck.I don't know if it was to big or it just didn't work.I Put on a 750 holley double pumper and what a difference. It is very responsive and just pulls all they way to 6 grand. I also have a 4 speed in this car. I would go with a holley. Brian

Any Holley DP 750- 850 will be good. I think you will like the change. I would buy something new for the first one , you dont want to chase your tail on somebody elses problem. Unles you can really trust a friend or something.

4780 800 Double Pumper, will do the trick for you. Since its a stick, and not a daily driver I would stay away from a vacuum secondary.

Dave
X2:thumbsup:
Stick trans. DBL pumper
Auto trans. Vac sec.

take it to a shop and have them tune it. The Eddy carbs are good as are Qjets, holleys etc... seems a lot of folks will think a carb brand is no good just because they can't get it to "work". Worth a trip to the local HP shop to get it tuned.... take it from there before you outlay any $$$$.

like they all say > pretty much.
personally the 3310 750 cfm vac sec works best for me.
I have a mild 396. if I put the 650 cfm dp I have on the shelf on that bb it is like throwing a rag over it. cant imagine using anything smaller than 750 cfm on a big cube engine like yours...
used holleys - beware of warped throttle plates - they will not seal to the manifold...

I think a 750 or 850 DP would work good for you.A Holley carb is pretty easy to rebuild. There are many used carbs for sale, that can be rebuild, and would work great. If you do buy a used carb, I would suggest you check it out in person.(had bad luck buying used carbs online). The main thing you want to look for is the wear on the throttle shaft. A throttle shaft that has a lot of wear will cause a vacume leak. Also if your buying a carb from a guy that had it on a boat take the float bowls off and see how much crap is it. other than that you should be fine. just my 2 cents
