I had a home improvement project to do this weekend and when it was all said and done I didn't have to run to the store to get anything extra, nothing got broken, the install went through without a hitch and I didn't even use a single expletive! On top of all that, I was also able to get it done with time enough to spare to get some work done on my truck! AND I still had some time to work on a shelving project the wife has been on me to finish.
The home improvement for this week was to install custom made storm windows. At the last minute when I was ordering them over a month ago I subtracted 1/8" off the width so I'd have a 1/16" cushion on either side for an easier install and when's the last time you saw a door or window frame that was perfectly square anyway? I think that's entirely why the install went so smooth.
Of course I only installed three windows but the two in our living room are really quite huge. These are only the windows on the front of our house, since we plan to buy them as we can afford them and work our way around the house all summer and not do any of it on credit. Another incredulous part of the story is that I convinced my wife to do this job piece by piece instead of all at once!
After spending nearly $1000 on these three custom-built-you-can't-return-them-if-they-don't-fit windows you can imagine my relief when they popped right in and fit like a glove. They also make the front of our house look great!
All those years of fighting every project I touch it sure is nice to know how it SHOULD work! Is this a do it yourselfer kind of zen?
