I have a set of NGK plugs #TR55IX (l is the letter I as in eye). The porcelain is white as snow on all 8 plugs. All 8 plugs also show a lot of soot around the outer metal base. What does that mean? I also read somewhere that a blown intake manifold gasket can cause oil to be sucked in and cause something like this. My engine is an 70s/80s 350 4 bolt main block with 906 Vortec heads and an air gap manifold. Roller cam and lifter and roller rockers. Also, I have (what I consider) a POS Aces "Kill shot" TBI system. More on that in a minute. On a spark plug posting I started there was/is as many different recommendations as to the correct plugs as there is plugs.
Now to the Aces unit. It came with a monitor that show the various engine parameters. It shows that it goes closed loop in under a minute. Per instruction and checked again yesterday, Timing is suppose to be set at 15 BTDC static. I further moved the distributor so that the picked and rotor are aligned. It was very close to that before I checked it. I checked the firing order and that was all correct. At an idle the timing shows the timing at 3-4 degrees. Just putting the transmission in gauge and the time jumps to 16 degrees, just touching the gas peddle sends the timing to 37 to 43 degrees (it stays at 43 all the time the engine is under load no matter how much load). To me this is ALL wrong. I was always told that 37 degrees was the max for any engine. I also read that the Vortec heads don't like more than about 30 degrees advanced. Comments here. Another strange is that "IF" I think about decelerating it's like the engine shuts off (even the exhaust tone goes quiet) until I "think" about accelerating again and it picks back up (I feel power and hear the exhaust again). To me that spells Throttle position sensor problem. Aces tech is no help. I did speak to a former Aces tech in Austin, Texas and he said the best thing I could do would be to throw away that Aces distributor and reinstall my oem dizzy with an Ignitor by Pertronics. I do have a brand new Ignitor that I bought before getting this hair brained idea to go all the way with Aces. Comments appreciated here
I'm about ready to get another dizzy that has a driven gear that correct for a roller cam. I understand that they are different from a flat tappet cam. I also want to get a vacuum advance that is adjustable to limit it to 30 or so degrees. Recommendations as to year make and model for that distributor please. Any thin else y'all can think of would be appreciated.
