I acquired a 66 2 door at Christmas last year. Just barely getting started on it. Mechanically, seems pretty good. Still having issue with exactly which small block I've got. There is a tag on the front of block from Pacific Coast Auto, showing cylinders bored 30 over, rods and main at 10. Now, I've been in a small argument with a mech here at work, who swears that you cannot get over 300 hp out of a small block without using turbo or supercharging. Any truth to that? Again, just getting started, not planning to do anything like that, just a cruiser!!

Did not think that this question would get that much "controversy" if you will. Thanks for the feedback and I will locate all of those numbers and get back to all soon. Maybe this weekend or early next week. By the way, I was pretty sure he was "blowing smoke" somewhere!!!

Mike, here are numbers that I just got. Casting number shows 3970010. Engine ID number and VIN code show the following 171204060 then K02 28 CHP. Hope this is enough info so you can help me out. Called one local shop and they gave me the following: 68-69 327, or 68-79 4 bolt main 350. Still no word from Pacific Nation Auto Parts. Sent them e-mail 2 wks ago, no word. If anyone from Tacoma area is reading, date on Pac. Nat'l tag is 12/90, with number of 27687. Cyl's are 30 over, rod & main 10 over. any help is appreciated!

Appreciate the information - apparently my eyes are going real bad, real fast!! I'm leaning torwards the 350 also. Don't think that many folks around here would be looking towards putting "exotic" or rare engines in a car like this. As soon as weather clears up a bit, I'll get pix of numbers and get them on this site, and we'll get this settled!! Thanks to all for the input, it is greatly appreciated.

Ok, here's the latest on this car. I've determined with 99% reliability that the engine is a 1977 350 4-bolt that came out of a truck before rebuild by Pacific National in Tacoma. I've been told by a few folks around here that Pacific did real great rebuilds. The heads are 194's, that are in great condition. I don't think that I will be doing anything to the motor as far as building up in power. It's got enough for me. For all of you that have helped in getting this far, THANKS A BUNCH! I'm sure that there will more questions in the future, in fact, how about now. Realizing that points and the old distributor can be a pain, is it in fact a good idea to switch to an HEI system, then what is the best brand for the lowest $'s?

I have no record of any names of anyone that may have done the rebuild. I'm still trying to get in touch with one of the former owners of this car, still no luck! But, as I've said, for me, I'm happy with the performance that this has. I'm not interested in building a racer, just a cruiser with some punch to it. Thanks again to all that have helped me in getting this thing ironed out! Talk to ya later!
