Starting problem

I've never encountered this before. A friend put a 350 in his '63 Nova wagon, vortec heads, GM HOT cam, Air Gap, 670 Holley, headers, you know, nice street engine. The engine would fire but not stay running. He had me re-check the valve adjustment. We verified TDC. It will start and run for about one second, sometimes spitting a tiny bit thorough the carb when it dies. The only thing I don't like is the fact he had to run a few new ignition wires because of years of "electrical engineers" improving the original harness! And the fact he has a ProComp distributor. He moved the timing around to no avail. Any ideas?

does it quit when he releases the key-some of the early ones that used res. got a 12v shot off the starter, then when you released the key power went thru the res.
if the res. failed, or wasnt wired correctly, it would die
hard to tell, no telling whats been done right or wrong-start by checking for 12v at the dist with the key "on"

Verified 12v + at coil with key on and during cranking. Will run after key is let off. Thanks for the replies!

Well...I put one of my MSD distributors in the engine and quickie installed a 6A box on the car. It started instantly. I told him the ProComp stuff had a bad reputation! At least it was easy. Thanks!
