spit-balling... 11-second small block?

My brother is in the (long, slow) process of restoring his 70 Z-28. This has to be an 11-second ride, but with the small block! (Are we even allowed to talk about small blocks in the Performance section? :) ) We haven't played with a small block in decades... my initial thought would be to call Straub and bolt some AFRs and a HR onto the stock bottom end. But I'm curious to get opinions on what others have done. This will be an old-school ride with a Muncie.
Thanks!

A lot of guys running Summit Series Sportsman class (12.0 floor) at the local track fit that bill. Lots on 1st and second gen Camaros and Nova's with pretty mild small blocks. Most will run 11.50's-11.70's, the basic recipe is 383, 195-200 cc head, 9.5-1 compression, RPM Air Gap or Victor Jr., 750dp, hydraulic roller with .530-.540 lift and 230-240 dual pattern cam, 4.10's, 3000-3500 stall converter, and DOT tire. Your biggest obsticle will be the 4spd.

Good luck

I built a couple nice daily driver's with 350" engines that run 11's
But the cars were 78 nova's the latest one is a 355 and weighs 3000 without driver

Cast 350 crank cast 345np pistons USA made ones with .0035" piston to wall
.005 deck clearance .038" gasket 62.5cc heads..Heads are GM iron 601 castings ported
with 1.94-1.50 valves
Screw in studs and guide plates ..stock pushrods..stock connecting rods with ARP bolts.
Torqued with stretch gauge.

Cam is the 292magnum comp grind hydraulic flat tappet.
Anti pump up lifters zero lash Z28 springs 110 seat pressure..But would be better with a tad more..Shift RPM is 7400
Th350 with B&M 3000 stall that stalls to 2400 rpm in this .
Intake is a tunnelram 12" tall and 2 edelbrock 600cfm carbs..
Pertronix point conversion and mid 1980's ford coil..
Solid core plug wires...ac R45TS plugs.

1.6 60 foot and 116-117 trap speed
MT tires 457 gears in a 9" rear...
91 octane 7-11 gas

That whole build is cheap...
My 78 was quicker same setup but i ran a solid lifter cam and the single point distributor.
My cam was an older grind C4C herbert 235-245@.050" .500 lift on a 108LS
And i had a little over 11:1 compression.
My car would beat my buddies VMax and my V65 magna(11.51 et) which was quicker than the VMax..My car was a tad lighter and more aero efficient.
That 350 could hit 176MPH in 3/4 of a mile.
I ran 370 gears and a 3000 stall that stalled to 3000 and flashed to 3000..good converter. I ran hoosier dirt stocker tires chainlink pattern and 29" tall then they grew taller at speed.

The 292 magnum is 244@ .050 and .501 lift on a 110

You can do it on the cheap if you are crafty.
Or go afr and roller...I like my solids.. :)

Even easier nowadays with great off the shelf heads and mild cams. I drive my car to the track most times (~30 minutes) and its almost exclusively street driven. Runs high 11's with zero prep. This thing is really mild; 15 inches of vacuum and almost smooth idle. Combo below. Small block is not the problem anymore. Just gotta get it to hook and run the right converter.

Like someone else said, the 4 speed will be the biggest obstacle. And not the transmission, but rather the skill to work it. Not a lot of folks out there anymore who can shift one through all the gears with the throttle WFO, and I mean never lifting off the floor from green light to finish line. Kind of a lost art. And no, lifting the throttle between gears and revving again when the clutch is released IS NOT the same thing.

Yeah- both big block cars! It has been a long time since we tried to make power with a small block. I love all of the ideas here- lots to think about. My brother can really row the gears on a Muncie and he can set them up so they shift like butter. Now I'm all excited to get it done!

I almost had a 11 second 67 with a very mild 350 and 4 speed with 4:10 gears.

I ran consistent 12.20 to12.30s on this combo.

If I had gotten the 60's to a 1.6 to 1.5...might of got a 11 second run.

I had 60's in the 1.8 to 2.0...cheap shocks on the car.

My combo was a zz4 short block with about 10.3 compression. Hyd roller cam of 280/288 and .530/.530 lift on a 108 lsa. The @ .050 numbers were 226/234. Had 195 heads that had just a valve job. RPM intake and a 650 DP.

Alot of fun on the street too!

totally agree with this
decent heads and a mild girly roller cam will make and honest 450-475hp and put even a heavy car in the 11s. My mellow 383 would run 11s in a heavy car.
mild 383 would be the cheap/easy way to do it.

Id run about 11-12:1
195-210 comp port head
Got a fresh solid roller 250/254@050 that would be sweet for this
Vic Jr/similar with a little work, 750 set up right.
Easy 11 sec combo without reeealy reaching for it.
Put at least a 4.11 or lower in it get a little rpm going through the traps. Taller tire Go 4.56
